How a guest orders by QR

What a guest does from the scan to the food on the table. Which code opens what (a table, pick up or delivery, the queue, a booking), the menu, a dish, the cart, Send order, My orders, and what the restaurant does in between.

On this page

A guest at your restaurant can order from their own phone. They point the phone's camera at the QR code on the table, and your menu opens in the phone's browser. There is nothing to install and no account to make. They choose dishes, send the order, and follow it on My orders until it reaches the table. They pay at the counter, as usual: there is no online payment.

This guide is the whole journey, from the scan to the bill. Each screen has its own guide, linked at each step.

The guest's page is in English only, whatever language the POS or the back office is set to.

Before you start

These are for the restaurant, not the guest:

  • The outlet has a QR profile chosen, and the profile is switched on (Self-ordering is on). See Outlets: QR ordering and QR Ordering: a profile's settings.
  • The dishes guests may order are marked Show on QR menu. With a Menu chosen on the profile, guests see only the dishes on that menu that are also marked so. See QR Ordering.
  • The codes are printed: on paper from the POS with Print QR, or as a sheet from the back office. See QR Ordering: Codes to print.

The guest needs only a phone with a camera and the internet.

Which code opens what

A restaurant can have four kinds of code. They all open the same page, but each starts it in its own way.

The codeWhere it isWhat the page asks firstWhere the order goes
A table's codeOn the table: a slip printed by the POS, or a stickerNothing: the menu opens at once, for that tableThe table's bill
The Delivery / Pick up codeA poster at the door, a sticker on the counter, or a shared linkHow would you like your order?: collect it, or have it delivered, with name and phoneA bill of its own, paid when it is collected or delivered
The queue codeA sheet a cashier prints from the POS's QueueThe guest's name, phone and number of guests, for a queue numberKept until the group is given a table, then that table's bill
A booking's linkChoose your food now on the guest's own booking pageNothing: the menu opens for that bookingKept until the party is seated, then their table's bill

A table's code is one of three kinds, chosen when it is printed:

  • One time: stops working when the table's bill is paid. The next party gets a new slip.
  • One day: stops working at the end of the business day.
  • Permanent: for a code stuck to the table. It keeps working, bill after bill.

See Pick up and delivery from a counter code and Join the queue from your phone.

The way, step by step

The four screens a guest meets: the menu, a dish, the cart, and My orders.
  1. The menu: opens straight after the scan, with the outlet's name and the table at the top. See The menu page.
  2. A dish: a tap opens it, with its choices. See Choosing a dish's options.
  3. Add: puts the dish in the cart. A bar at the foot of the menu then shows how many are in the cart and what they come to.
  4. Send order: on the cart page, sends everything in the cart to the restaurant. See The cart and sending the order.
  5. My orders: what became of each order sent, and the table's bill. See My orders and the table's bill.
  1. The guest scans the code with the phone's camera and taps the link it shows. The page says Opening the menu… for a moment.
  2. The menu opens. At the top: the outlet's name, Table T6, and the restaurant's welcome words. Under them, the buttons Call waiter and Request bill when the restaurant offers them.
  3. The guest taps a dish, chooses its options, and taps Add. The page says Added 1 × Nasi Lemak Ayam for a moment. They add as many dishes as they like.
  4. The guest taps the bar at the foot, View cart. The cart page opens: Your order.
  5. They check the lines, change a quantity or Remove a dish, type a voucher code or a note if they have one.
  6. They tap Send order · RM 18.70. It says Sending…, then the page turns to My orders.
  7. My orders says Waiting for the restaurant until a cashier accepts the order, then Accepted · with the kitchen. The table's bill underneath shows each dish as the kitchen moves it on: Sent to the kitchen, Being prepared, Ready, Served.
  8. To order again, the guest taps Order more, or the Menu tab. Each order they send is a round of its own on the same bill.
  9. They pay at the counter, or ask for the bill with Request bill. When the bill is paid, the page's session ends.

What the restaurant does in between

  1. The order arrives in QR orders on the POS, with a chime, and in QR Orders in the back office. Nothing reaches the kitchen until you accept it.
  2. A cashier presses Accept, or Reject. See Accept or reject QR orders.
  3. Accepted, the dishes go on the table's bill and print in the kitchen, as an order taken at the till does.
  4. The guest's My orders follows by itself.

With Accept table orders automatically ticked on the profile, a table's order goes straight to the kitchen, and the guest reads Your order is with the kitchen at once. Orders for pick up or delivery always wait for a cashier.

Several phones at one table

Everybody at a table may scan the same code. Every phone that scans while the table has an open bill orders onto that bill. On the cart page each of them reads This will be added to your table's open bill.

Each phone lists only the orders it sent itself, under Your orders. Your table's bill, underneath, shows everything on the bill, including what was ordered with staff.

How long the page stays open

The phone keeps its place at the table for the minutes the profile sets in Session lasts (minutes), 180 to begin with. Every use starts the count again, so a guest still ordering is never cut off.

The session ends when the table's bill is paid, or when the phone has not been used for that long. The guest then reads Your ordering session has ended, with Start again. A new scan of a code that still works starts a new session. Anything left in the cart is still saved on the phone.
