Item code, barcode and search
Put a dish on the bill by its code or its barcode, from the box at the top of the bill or with a barcode scanner, or find it in the search list. What a code matches, a code several dishes share, a code nothing has, scanning on the table screen, and a kept-item slip or a voucher scanned.
On this page
Besides tapping a button, a dish can go on the bill by its item code or its barcode: typed in the box at the top of the bill, or read by a barcode scanner. The 🔍 beside the box opens a search list, to find a dish by its name.
All three work from this POS's own menu, so they work without the internet. A dish found this way asks exactly what a tap asks: its choices, its price, its weight, who served. See Add dishes to the bill.
Before you start
- The dish has an Item code or a Barcode in the back office (Items, the dish, General). See New item.
- A barcode scanner is plugged into the POS and types like a keyboard (most do). Nothing is set up on the POS for it.
The code box
- Item code or barcode: type the code and press Enter. Esc empties the box.
- ⌨: the POS's own on-screen keyboard, to type in the box on a screen with no keyboard. Its Enter rings the code as a real Enter does.
- 🔍: the search list. See Find a dish in the search list.
- No item has the code or barcode 8888.: what the bill says when nothing has the code. The box keeps the code, selected, so the next scan or key replaces it.
- Tap the box Item code or barcode.
- Type the dish's code, for example TT01, or scan its barcode.
- Press Enter (a scanner presses it for you).
- The dish goes on the bill, or asks its questions first. The box empties, ready for the next code.
What a code matches
- An item code or a barcode, exactly, in capitals or small letters alike: tt01 finds TT01.
- A barcode with or without its leading zeros: a scanner that reads 0012345 finds the barcode 12345. An item code is never matched this way: 01 and 1 are two different codes.
- Only dishes switched on: a dish switched off in the back office is never found.
| The code matches | What happens |
|---|---|
| One dish | It goes on the bill, asking what a tap asks. |
| Several dishes | The search list opens with only those dishes, and says 2 items have the code 8888. Pick one. Tap the one you mean. The POS never picks for you. |
| Nothing | The bill says No item has the code or barcode 8888. and nothing goes on. |
| A dish sold out today | Nothing goes on. The bill says Nasi Goreng is sold out today. Clear it in the back office if it is back. |
Scan with a barcode scanner
A scanner works anywhere on the sales screen: you do not need to tap the box first. The scan goes onto the bill on screen, by the same rule as the box.
On the table screen, with no bill open, a scan starts a quick sale with the dish on it. A dish that asks something (its choices, its weight, who served) asks first, over the table screen, and the quick sale opens only once it is answered: Cancel leaves no empty bill behind. A set meal opens its quick sale first, for its choices. See Quick sale.
Two kinds of slips are not dishes:
- A kept-item slip (a bottle kept for a guest) opens Kept items with that keep found, wherever you scan it. See Hand a kept item back.
- A printed voucher, scanned on a bill when no dish has that code, opens the Voucher window with the code in it, already checked (when a voucher can be used on the bill now). See A voucher on the bill.
Find a dish in the search list
- Name, code or barcode: type part of a dish's name, its second-language name, its short name, its code or its barcode. The list follows each letter typed.
- Close: closes the list without adding anything. Esc does the same.
- A dish: its name, and under it its code, its barcode and its second-language name. Tap it to put it on the bill. The list closes.
- The price: or Open price for a dish whose price is keyed at the POS.
- SOLD OUT: the dish is faded. A tap says it is sold out today and adds nothing.
- Press 🔍 beside the code box.
- Type part of the name, for example teh.
- Tap the dish you want. It goes on the bill, asking what a tap asks.
The best matches come first: an exact code or barcode, then a code that starts with what you typed, then a name that starts with it, then anything that contains it. The list shows at most 60 dishes: type more to find one further down.
Enter in the box picks a dish only when nobody could mean another: the one dish listed, or the one whose code or barcode is exactly what you typed. With more than one listed, it says More than one item is listed. Tap the one you want.
The code box and the search list are the same. The box uses the tablet's own keyboard (there is no ⌨ at its end), and its Done key rings the code as Enter does. A barcode scanner that types like a keyboard works as on Windows.
