Taxes & Charges: the service charge
The restaurant's service charge, on its row in Taxes & Charges. Its rate and the outlets it reaches, an outlet on a rate of its own, the tax charged on the charge (Tax on this charge, Save this), the order types and dishes without it, and adding one.
On this page
The service charge is your own revenue, not the government's. It is a row in Taxes & Charges with What kind of money is this? set to Service charge — your own revenue, and its rate is edited there and nowhere else. A new restaurant has one: SVC, 10%.
It is worked out once, at the bottom of the bill, on the summed base, before tax. It is never charged line by line and never declared to be inside a menu price.
Its row answers four questions:
- Its rate: what every outlet that follows it charges.
- Where this charge is made: which outlets follow it, and which keep a rate of their own.
- Tax on this charge: the government tax charged on the service charge (and on any charge of your own).
- Where it is not charged: the order types, categories and dishes that do not pay it.
Before you start
- You need Taxes & Charges, Edit.
- A restaurant has one service charge. It cannot have two switched on at once.
Open the service charge
- In the menu, under MASTERS, click General Setup, then Taxes & Charges.
- Click Edit on the row whose What it is says Service charge, such as SVC. The window SVC — Service charge opens on its Tax tab.

8Receipt label- The violet box: what kind of money this is: Service charge, your own revenue.
- What kind of money is this?: Service charge — your own revenue. Changing it makes the row something else.
- Where this charge is made: which switched-on outlets charge this rate, and which charge a rate of their own, for example Charged at 2 outlets of 3 at 10%; Kopitiam Demo Ipoh charges its own 12%. Show all 3 outlets lists each outlet: follows this charge — 10%, or charges its own 12% — does not follow with an amber Own rate.
- The footnote: an outlet on a rate of its own does not move with this rate. It is brought onto the restaurant's service charge on its own Money tab, because that changes what its guests pay.
- Tax on this charge: one tick per government tax. The ticked taxes are charged on the service charge, added on top of it, at every outlet that follows it. Nothing ticked: The service charge is not taxed.
- Save this: saves the Tax on this charge ticks by themselves, at once, apart from Save. It is greyed until a tick changes. It asks first.
- The line under it: which outlets the answer reaches, and which keep theirs because they charge a service charge of their own.
- Rate %: the service charge's rate. When outlets follow it, an amber line warns which ones move with it. Changed and not saved, another line says, for example, Not saved yet: 10% becomes 12%. Every outlet that follows this charge rings up the new figure on its next bill, as soon as its POS pulls the change.
- Receipt label: how the bill prints it. Under it, as on every tax: Statutory code, Display order and Active.
- Save: saves the code, name, rate, label and Active, and closes the window.
Change the service charge's rate
- Open the service charge (Edit on its row).
- Read Where this charge is made and the amber line under Rate %: they name the outlets that will charge the new rate.
- Type the new Rate %, such as 12.
- Click Save. Every outlet that follows the charge rings up the new rate on its next bill, as soon as its POS pulls the change.
Set the tax on the service charge
- Open the service charge.
- Under Tax on this charge, tick the government taxes charged on it and untick the others, for example tick SST6 and untick SVCTAX. Untick them all for no tax.
- Click Save this.
- The back office says what is charged today and after, for example The service charge is charged SVCTAX 6% today, at the 2 outlets that follow it. After this save it is charged SST6 6%, added on top of the charge, at every one of them, from the next bill each POS rings up after it syncs. Go ahead? Click OK.
- The big green SAVED says, for example, Saved at 2 outlets of 2. Every POS there charges the new tax on the service charge from its next sync.
Order types and dishes without the service charge
Which order types, categories and dishes do not pay the service charge is set on its Where it is not charged tab. See Taxes & Charges: Where it is not charged.
- Order types: the same answer as the Service charge tick on Order Types. A new restaurant charges none on Take Away and Counter.
- Dishes: a dish's Tax & charges tab shows whether it pays the service charge, and says where to change it: here.
Add a service charge
When the restaurant has none, the list says This restaurant has no service charge. To add one, make a new row here and set "what kind of money is this" to Service charge.
