Taxes & Charges: a charge of your own

A charge of your own, such as 1% packaging. What makes it not a tax, make one, say which order types it is charged on, the tax charged on it, why a bill carries only one, and a rate of 0%.

A charge of your own is a percentage you add to a bill for yourself, such as 1% packaging on take-away. It is a row in Taxes & Charges with What kind of money is this? set to A charge of your own, like packaging — your own revenue.

It sits beside SST and the service charge and is typed into the same kind of Rate % box, but it is your money. Every outlet charges it; what you choose is which order types it lands on.

Before you start

  • You need Taxes & Charges, Edit.
  • Decide which order types pay it, for example Take Away and Counter only.

Make a charge of your own

  1. In the menu, under MASTERS, click General Setup, then Taxes & Charges.
  2. Click + New. The window New tax or charge opens.
  3. Set What kind of money is this? to A charge of your own, like packaging — your own revenue. The box at the top turns violet and three lines say what makes it not a tax.
  4. Type a Code, such as PKG, and a Name, such as Packaging.
  5. Type the Rate %, such as 1, and a Receipt label, such as Packaging.
  6. Click Save.
  7. Open it again with Where it is not charged, and tick the order types that do not pay it. See Choose the order types it is charged on.
A charge of your own: what makes it not a tax, and whether it is the one your bills carry.
  1. The violet box: Your own charge, and what that means.
  2. The three differences: it is your money; it is never one of a dish's taxes; it is reported apart from tax.
  3. What kind of money is this?: A charge of your own, like packaging — your own revenue.
  4. Is this the charge your bills carry?: a bill carries one charge of your own. This box says whether it is this one: This is the charge your bills carry., or why not. It changes as you type the display order. See Only one charge of your own per bill.
  5. The tax on it: there is no tax tick on this row. The tax charged on it is the service charge's Tax on this charge.
  6. Rate %: its rate. At 0 an amber line says At 0% no bill carries this charge at all — a charge of nothing is not a charge.
  7. Display order: on a charge of your own, the lowest one is the one a bill carries.
  8. Active: ticked, it is charged.
  9. Save: saves it and closes the window. The Apply to tab is only for a government tax: once saved, a charge of your own has Tax and Where it is not charged.

Choose the order types it is charged on

The ticks on Where it is not charged are where it is not charged. For "1% packaging on take-away and counter", tick the other order types.

  1. Click Where it is not charged on the charge's row.
  2. Under Order types, tick Dine In and QR Order.
  3. Read the plain sentence above the list: Packaging 1% is charged on Take Away and Counter. It is not charged on Dine In and QR Order.
  4. Click Save where it is not charged.
The order types of a charge of your own: the plain sentence above the ticks.
  1. The plain sentence: the order types it is charged on, then those it is not. It follows the ticks before you save.
  2. The note: the ticks are where it is not charged.
  3. A tick: this order type does not pay it.

On the Taxes & charges list, the row's Where it is charged says the same: Take Away and Counter, and in grey not on Dine In and QR Order. Categories and single dishes can be switched off too, as for any tax. See Taxes & Charges: Where it is not charged.

The tax charged on it

A charge of your own has no tax tick of its own. It is taxed like the service charge, by the service charge's Tax on this charge: There is one answer for all your own revenue: an outlet that pays tax on its service charge pays it on this charge too, and an outlet with nothing ticked there taxes neither of them. See Taxes & Charges: the service charge.

Only one charge of your own per bill

A bill has room for one charge of your own. When several are switched on, the one with the lowest Display order is charged, and the others charge nothing.

The screen says so in three places:

  • Above the list, an amber line: A bill has room for one charge of your own. Packaging 1% is the one it carries; Delivery fee 2% is set up here and no bill charges it. The one with the lowest display order wins, so give the charge you want the lowest number — or switch the other off.
  • On the other row, under Where it is charged: an amber Not charged, and Packaging comes first.
  • In its window, under Is this the charge your bills carry?: No bill carries this one. A bill has room for one charge of your own and Packaging comes first, at display order 0. To charge this one instead, give it a lower display order than that — or switch Packaging off.
  1. Decide which charge your bills should carry.
  2. Edit it and give it the lowest Display order, or switch the others off (untick Active).
  3. Click Save.
