Vouchers with promotions and discounts
What happens when a voucher meets a promotion, a discount keyed by staff or a QR game prize on one bill. The three choices on a voucher, why the promotion wins, the cashier's question about a keyed discount, vouchers that stand alone, game prizes that stack, and the order money comes off.
On this page
One bill can carry promotions, a voucher, QR game prizes and a discount keyed by staff. A voucher's settings in the back office decide which of them may stand beside it, and the POS, the kiosk and the QR menu follow the same rules. Nobody decides on the spot: the cashier is asked only about a keyed discount.
Before you start
- The choices are set on each voucher, under With promotions and discounts (see What a voucher gives and when). A printed batch's choices are on its codes and do not change after they are generated.
- A voucher that uses Not with these promotions or Not with a manual discount needs FooodPos 0.1.64 or newer on the POS. An older POS is told Update this POS to use this voucher.
The choices on a voucher
- Can be used together with a promotion: the usual choice. Both come off the same bill.
- Not with these promotions: the promotions picked below (red chips) are never on a bill together with this voucher.
- Cannot be used with a promotion: no promotion at all beside it. Such a voucher also stands alone: it goes on no bill that already holds a voucher, and no voucher joins a bill holding it.
- Not with a manual discount: the voucher is never used beside a discount staff key on the bill or on a dish.
The line under the choices says the POS "asks which to use". Since FooodPos 0.1.96 it no longer asks about a promotion: the promotion wins, as below. It still asks about a keyed discount.
A voucher and a promotion
| What happens at the POS | What the POS does |
|---|---|
| The voucher is typed on a bill a promotion it is not used with is already on | Refuses it: This voucher cannot be used with Kopi Happy Hour. That promotion is already on this bill. Nothing on the bill changes. |
| The voucher is on first; then the promotion starts to apply (a dish added, the happy hour opens, the cashier applies it) | The promotion wins. The voucher comes off the bill by itself, never used up, and the POS says once: Voucher WELCOME10 was taken off: it can't be used with Kopi Happy Hour. The customer keeps it. |
| The promotion stops applying later (the dish is taken off) | The voucher does not come back by itself. The cashier may apply it again. |
On the QR menu it is the same: the guest's cart is priced without the voucher, the voucher comes off when the order is accepted, and the page says The voucher WELCOME10 is not used on this bill: it cannot be used with Kopi Happy Hour, which applies instead. The voucher is kept for another day.
A voucher and a discount keyed by staff
With Not with a manual discount ticked on the voucher:
- The voucher is typed on a bill that already has a keyed discount: refused, This voucher cannot be used with a discount keyed by staff. A keyed discount is already on this bill.
- The voucher is on first, then staff key a discount: the POS asks.
- Keep the voucher: the discount is not applied, and nothing is sent.
- Use the discount: the voucher comes off the bill first (the customer keeps it), then the discount is applied.
A discount a manager keys is never blocked by a promotion marked Cannot be combined: the POS shows Kopi Happy Hour is marked as not to be combined, but a manual discount on this bill still applies.
Promotions that cannot be combined
A promotion with Cannot be combined ticked (see When, where and how it applies) is, when it applies, the only promotion or voucher on the bill. The POS's Promotions window says Kopi Happy Hour cannot be combined with anything else, so no other promotion or voucher applies to this bill. The others show cannot be combined with Kopi Happy Hour.
One voucher per bill, and QR game prizes
- A bill holds one ordinary voucher: a code, a printed code or one a guest types. A second is refused: This bill already has a voucher.
- A bill also holds any number of QR game prizes. A prize set to This bill goes on by itself; its line reads Game prize: 50% off, and the POS shows Game prize added to this bill: 50% off.
- Each voucher keeps its own rules: its own minimum spend (judged on the bill after line discounts), its own cap, its own Not with choices. They are applied in the order they went on, each on what is left.
- A voucher that Cannot be used with a promotion still stands alone: no prize joins it.
- Prizes stack only at an outlet where every POS is 0.2.49 or later. Elsewhere a bill takes one voucher, prizes included.
The POS's voucher window says it in one line: One voucher per bill, besides QR game prizes. Checked with the cloud. See QR game prizes on the bill.
The order money comes off a bill
Each step works on what the steps before it left:
- On each line: the cashier's discount on that line, then the item promotions (item discounts, happy hours, buy X get Y), then a voucher for chosen items (on those items' lines, before tax), then a member's voucher for items.
- On the bill: the spend tier, then a voucher for the whole bill, then a member's voucher for the bill, then the manager's discount on the whole bill, last.
A voucher's Taken off then says where it stands against the service charge and the tax: before both (usual), before the tax only, or after both (see Taken off). Every POS at the outlet must be 0.2.48 or later for an item voucher to come off its lines; before that it comes off the bill.
