Modifiers
Make the questions the POS asks when a dish is added, such as Ice or Spice Level, in the back office's Modifiers, with every rule (Pick one or Pick many, Minimum, Maximum, repeats, asking at once) and every part of an option (picture, kitchen name, price, stock, default).
On this page
A modifier group is a question the POS asks when a dish is added to a bill: Ice, Spice Level, Add-ons. Its answers are its options: Normal Ice, Less Ice, No Ice. An option can cost more (or less), print its own words on the kitchen ticket, take a drink off the stock, and wear a picture on the POS.
You make a group on this page, on its Group tab. Then you say which dishes ask it: on its second tab, Apply to items, or from each dish's own Modifiers tab on Items. Both write the same link.
Before you start
- Anyone whose access group may view modifiers sees Modifiers in the menu. Making or changing a group needs the right to edit them. The owner's Administrator group has it; the Outlet Manager group of a new restaurant may only look.
- A restaurant that started with sample data has two groups: Spice Level (Mild, Medium, Extra Spicy, No Chilli) and Ice (Normal Ice, Less Ice, No Ice), each with a default.
Open Modifiers
- In the back office's menu, under MASTERS, click Menu, then Modifiers.

- Modifiers: under MASTERS, in the Menu category.
- + New group: makes a new group. See Make a group.
- Name: the group's name, its second-language name in grey after it, and, under it, By category: with the categories it is on by category (see Modifiers: Apply to items).
- Choice: Pick one (blue) or Pick many (violet on the screen).
- Required: Min 1 (amber) when the cashier must choose at least that many; Optional when the question may be skipped.
- Options: the first five options that are on, with ★ on the default and the price when it is not zero (+2.00). +3 after them says how many more there are.
- Edit and Delete: open the group, or delete it.
- The line under the list: what the ★ means.
The Status column says Active, or Inactive for a group that is switched off; a switched-off group is drawn pale.
Make a group
- Click + New group. The window New modifier group opens on its Group tab.
- Type a Code, such as ICE, and a Name, such as Ice.
- Choose Pick one or Pick many, and the Minimum and Maximum, as the next part explains.
- Click + Option for each answer, and type its Name.
- Tick Default on the answer most guests want, if there is one.
- Click Save. The big green SAVED shows.
- To put the group on dishes, click Edit on its row, then the Apply to items tab. See Modifiers: Apply to items.

- Apply to items: the second tab, where you tick the dishes that ask this question. A new group must be saved first: until then the tab says Save this group first. Then open it again and its items can be ticked here.
- Code: a short code for the group, up to 20 characters, needed. No two groups may share one.
- Name: the question as the POS shows it, up to 100 characters, needed.
- Second language: the question in a second language, up to 100 characters.
- Choice: Pick one, one answer only, or Pick many, several answers. With Pick one the Maximum is 1 and cannot be changed.
- Minimum: how many answers the cashier must choose. 0 makes the question optional. 2 or more also ticks Same option can be chosen more than once, switches Choice to Pick many, and raises Maximum to at least the same number; a Maximum of 0, no limit, stays 0.
- Maximum: the most answers that may be chosen. 0 means no limit. It may not be below the Minimum.
- Display order: the group's place in the list on this page, lowest first.
- Same option can be chosen more than once: one answer may be chosen twice or more, such as two Guinness in Choose 2 bottles. Unticked, every answer counts once.
- Prompt as soon as the item is tapped: the POS asks the question the moment the dish is tapped. See When the POS asks.
- Active: untick it to switch the group off. A switched-off group is not asked on any dish.
- + Option: adds an answer at the foot of the list.
- Picture: the answer's picture on the POS. See An option's picture.
- Code: the answer's own code, up to 20 characters. It is optional: left empty, it shows Auto and gets the next number when the group is saved. Two answers of one group may not share a code.
- Name and Kitchen name: the answer as the POS shows it (needed), and under it the words printed on the kitchen ticket instead, up to 50 characters. An empty kitchen name prints the Name; the grey words in the box say which.
- Price +/−: what the answer adds to the dish's price, such as 2.00. A minus figure takes money off. 0 is free.
- Deducts stock: an item this answer takes off the stock, one each time it is chosen. See Answers that take stock off. Not shown while your plan has no Stock.
- Default: the answer that comes up already ticked when the POS asks. In a Pick one group, ticking one unticks the other.
- On: untick it to stop offering this answer, without deleting it.
- ✕: takes the answer out of the group when you save.
- Save: saves the group and its answers. Cancel closes the window and keeps nothing (a picture already chosen stays).
How the rules work together
What the POS writes beside the question comes from Choice, Minimum and Maximum:
| The question | Choice | Minimum | Maximum | The POS says |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ice | Pick one | 1 | 1 | choose 1 |
| Spice Level | Pick one | 0 | 1 | optional |
| Add-ons | Pick many | 0 | 3 | optional · up to 3 |
| Sauces | Pick many | 1 | 3 | choose 1–3 |
| Choose 2 bottles | Pick many, repeats on | 2 | 2 | choose 2 |
A question with a Minimum above 0 must be answered: the POS will not add the dish until it is, and says Still to choose: with the group's name.
When the POS asks
- A group with Prompt as soon as the item is tapped ticked, or with a Minimum above 0, is asked the moment the dish is tapped, or scanned.
- A group with neither is not asked when the dish is tapped. The cashier can still choose its answers later, from the bill line's window (Modifier).
- A Default only comes up ticked when the question is asked. It is never added without being asked.
An option's picture
- Save the group first: a new answer shows Save the group first where its picture goes.
- Click + Photo in the answer's Picture box, and choose a JPEG, a PNG or a WebP.
- The back office makes it smaller if it is big, sends it, and says The picture is on Less Ice. It is saved at once, without the group's Save.
- To change or take it off, click Change or Remove.
An answer that Deducts stock wears that item's picture, drawn pale, with from D01 GUINNESS under it, until it is given a picture of its own.
Answers that take stock off
Choose an item in Deducts stock, such as D01 — GUINNESS. Each time the answer is chosen, one of that item comes off the stock.
When you choose the item, the answer's Code and Name are filled in from it, but only while they are empty or still say what the last item filled in: words you typed are never overwritten. When another answer of the group already has that code, the new one gets -2, -3 after it (D01-2). Choosing — takes the link away and keeps the words.
What the cashier sees
On the POS, a dish with questions opens a window of them before it goes on the bill. On Windows it looks like this:
- The rule: from Choice, Minimum and Maximum.
- The default: already chosen; the cashier only confirms it.
- An optional question: may be left as it is.
- Add RM 3.50: puts the dish on the bill with its answers, at its price with them. It stays grey until every required question is answered.
See Choices and modifiers for the cashier's side.
Change, switch off or delete a group
- Edit: opens the group on its Group tab. Change it and Save. A POS takes it at its next contact with the cloud.
- Switch off: untick Active, then Save. No dish asks the question any more, but the dishes keep the group, ready for when it is switched on again.
- An answer: untick On to stop offering it. ✕ takes it out; an answer already on a past bill is switched off rather than deleted, so the old bills still name it.
- Delete: click Delete on the row. The back office asks first: Delete "Ice"? If it has been used on a bill it will be deactivated instead. Click OK: the message says Deleted, or Deactivated — used on past bills.
