Menu Designer: drag buttons and tabs
Move category tabs, buttons and automatically placed dishes in the Menu Designer by dragging them, with a mouse or a finger; what each drop does, what the marks while dragging mean, and how the new order is saved.
On this page
In the Menu Designer you can put things in order by dragging them:
- a category tab onto another tab: it takes that tab's place;
- a button onto an empty cell: it moves there; onto another button: the two swap;
- a pale dish (in a category that fills itself) onto another pale cell: it takes that place in the order the category fills in.
Every drag is a change like any other: nothing is saved until you press Save category (or Save tab order).
Before you start
- You need the right to edit menus. Without it nothing can be picked up.
- Dragging a pale dish also needs the right to edit Items, because it changes the dish's Display order there.
- Tabs can be dragged only when the menu has more than one category. An Auto menu has nothing to drag.
How to drag
With a mouse: press on the tab, button or pale cell, and move a few pixels with the button held. A plain click still opens what it always opened.
With a finger, on a touch screen: hold the thing still for a moment (about a third of a second), then move. A finger that moves at once scrolls the screen instead. Once something is picked up, the screen does not scroll under it.
While you drag:
- what you picked up is drawn faded;
- a dark label follows the pointer with its name and what letting go there would do;
- the cell under the pointer is outlined: amber where the drop is taken, red where it is refused;
- Esc puts it back. Letting go where nothing takes it puts it back too.
Menu Designer
- What you picked up: drawn faded while you drag.
- Swap places: let go on another button, and the two change places.
- Move here: let go on an empty cell, and the button moves there. A refused drop says Does not fit there in red, and the label says why.
- The label: the name of what you drag, and what the drop would do; Esc puts it back when the pointer is over nothing that takes it.
Move a category tab
- Pick up a tab and drag it onto the tab whose place it should take.
- A bar beside that tab shows where it will land, and the label says Before Drinks or After Drinks.
- Let go. The tabs between move along one.
- The line under the grid says tab order not saved, and the save button reads Save tab order. Click it.
The order is the menu's, so it is kept while you look at other categories, and it is saved on its own: no other category's buttons are written back. Save category also saves it, first, when the category on screen has changes too. The tabs are numbered Display order 1, 2, 3… in their new order, the order the POS draws them in, which is what Category settings then shows.
Move a button
- Pick up a button.
- Drag it onto an empty cell (Move here) or onto another button (Swap places).
- Let go. The line under the grid says unsaved changes.
- Click Save category.
The grid keeps its size. A drop that would leave a button outside the grid, or on top of another, is refused with the reason, as Edit button refuses it, for example "Teh Tarik" does not fit at row 5, column 4: it would fall outside the 5×5 grid. or "Teh Tarik" would overlap "Kopi O" there. From the keyboard, the same move is Edit button's Row and Column.
Move a pale dish
In a category that fills itself from an item category, a pale dish's place is the order the dishes fill in, which is their Display order on Items. So dragging it changes that.
- Pick up a pale cell and drag it onto another pale cell of the screen on show. The label says Fills in here.
- Let go. The dishes move up or down to make room.
- Click Save category. The dish's new display order is saved with the category.
Only the dragged dish gets a new number when one fits between its new neighbours. When none does, every dish of the item category is numbered again, 10, 20, 30…, in the new order.
Leave without saving
Choosing another menu, or switching the menu's mode, with any drag not saved asks Discard unsaved changes?. Choosing another tab asks it only when the category on screen has changes: a dragged tab order is kept while you look at other categories. Leaving the back office's screen asks the same in the browser's own words.
