Menu Designer: Menu settings
Choose where the POS puts a menu's category tabs, across the top, down the left (one to three columns, automatic or fixed rows) or as a text-only list, and which name its buttons show when a dish has a second-language name.
On this page
Menu settings holds two choices for a whole menu:
- Category tabs: where the POS puts the menu's tabs, and how big they are.
- Names on the POS: which name the POS shows on its buttons when a dish, a category or a choice has a second-language name.
Both are settings of the menu, not of one category, and they save on their own: changing them never touches the buttons you are placing. They work for Designed and Auto menus alike.
Before you start
- You need the right to edit menus.
- If your POS show All menus, the tabs follow the default menu's setting. Set that menu first. See Which menu decides.
Open Menu settings
- Open Menu, Menu Designer, and choose the menu in the menu list.
- Click Menu settings. The window Menu settings: Main Menu opens.
- Choose, then click Save. The big green SAVED shows.
While the window is open, the Menu Designer behind it already draws the tabs where you are choosing, as a POS will once it is saved.
- Across the top: a row of tabs above the dishes. Each tab is a raised key in its tab colour; the chosen one is white and pressed flat.
- Down the left: a column of tabs beside the dishes, with room for many more. A tab is white until it is chosen, then takes its tab colour. A tab with a picture shows it across the whole tab, with the name in front.
- Down the left, text only: a list of names beside the dishes, the most categories on one screen. See The text-only list.
- Columns (down the left only): how many tabs sit side by side, 1, 2 or 3. Each one more takes width from the dishes; the column never takes more than two fifths of the menu side. The words get a size smaller for each column.
- Rows (down the left only): Auto makes each tab a big button: at least 88 pixels tall, a few of them sharing the column's height, up to 140 each, and many keeping 88 and scrolling. 4 to 12 divide the column's height into that many rows; tabs beyond rows times columns scroll.
- The line under it: which POS show this menu and where their tabs will run, worked out as if saved. An amber Different tab layouts. warning follows when the POS will not use this setting (see Which menu decides).
- Names on the POS: the five choices, below. Second name only is the default.
- On the POS: a dish as the POS will draw it with the choice, using a long main name (Nasi Lemak Ayam Goreng Berempah) and a second name (香辣炸鸡椰浆饭).
- When the POS takes it: the tabs at its next sync, the names at once. A POS app from before these settings keeps the tabs across the top and the second name small.
- Save: saves both choices for this menu. Cancel keeps them as they were.
The columns and rows you chose are kept while the tabs are across the top or in the text-only list, so trying another place and coming back finds them again.
Names on the POS
When a dish, a category or a modifier's answer has a second-language name (the Second language box on Items, Categories and Modifiers), the POS shows the names this way on its dish buttons, its category tabs and its modifier and set windows:
| Choice | What the button shows |
|---|---|
| Second name only | The second-language name alone, at normal size. |
| Main name only | The main name alone, as if there were no second name. |
| Both names, same size | The main name, then the second name, both at normal size. A long main name keeps its lines first. |
| Main name normal, second name small | The main name at normal size, the second name smaller under it. |
| Main name small, second name normal | The main name smaller, the second name at normal size under it. |
A dish, category or choice with no second name always shows its main name at normal size. Printed paper is not this: what a receipt or kitchen slip prints is set in Print Formats.
The text-only list
Down the left, text only draws the tabs as a list of names:
- one column, twice as wide as a single column of tabs, with thin rows half as tall;
- each name a raised key in its tab colour, and the one selected white;
- no pictures; Columns and Rows are not used (the ones chosen before are kept);
- a POS not yet updated shows ordinary tabs down the left.
Which menu decides
- A POS given one menu of its own (its Menu box, on the POS's Settings, General) draws that menu's tabs and names as that menu says.
- A POS on All menus (as now) shows every menu's categories together, so it follows one menu's setting: the default menu's, or, with no active menu the default, the first active menu in display order.
The line under the choices names which menu the POS follows. When this menu is set otherwise, the amber Different tab layouts. warning says the POS ignores it, and names any other active menu set otherwise: Set them the same … so every menu agrees.
