Kitchen Stations: screen, pass and bump slips
Give a kitchen station a kitchen display, choose whether paper prints with it, make a station the pass (expeditor), choose when an order turns Ready on the Order board, and print a slip when a ticket is bumped.
On this page
A kitchen station can do more than print. Its tickets can show on a kitchen display, with or without paper. One station can be the pass (the expeditor): it gets a copy of every ticket, so somebody checks each order before it goes out. And a station can print a slip each time a ticket is bumped on its screen.
All of it is set on the station, in Room, Kitchen Stations, with five settings: Kitchen display, Paper with the screen, Expeditor / pass, Order is Ready when and Slip when bumped. The station's other settings are in Kitchen Stations.
Before you start
- Your access group needs Kitchen Stations with Edit.
- A kitchen display is a POS terminal in the mode Kitchen display, paired to a device. See Pair a POS terminal.
- For paper, each outlet sets the station's printer on a POS: Hardware, Printer. See Kitchen printers.
The five settings, part by part
Screen first: paper prints only when the POS is offline or the screen has not checked in for 30 seconds. A ticket the screen never showed is listed on the Kitchen Tickets page. The paper comes from the printer each outlet sets for this station on its POS (Hardware > Printer); an outlet with none shows the screen only.
2The cook's Done is enough for most kitchens. Choose Served when somebody at the pass checks each order before the guest is called.
4- Kitchen display: tick Show tickets on a screen when a kitchen display reads this station's tickets. A station with a screen needs no printer.
- Paper with the screen: shown only with a screen. Paper and screen: every ticket shows on the screen and prints too. Screen first, paper if the screen is down: the paper prints only when the POS is offline, or the screen has not checked in for 30 seconds.
- Expeditor / pass: tick Receives a copy of every ticket to make this station the pass. It gets a copy of every dish sent to every other station.
- Order is Ready when: shown only for the pass. The cook presses Done (the default) or The expeditor presses Served. It decides when an order turns Ready on the Order board. See When an order is Ready.
- Slip when bumped: tick Print a slip when bumped for a slip each time a ticket is bumped on the screen. See A slip when a ticket is bumped.
- Save: saves the station for every outlet. Each kitchen display and POS takes it at its next contact with the cloud.
A station with a screen
- Click Edit on the station's row (for example HOT).
- Tick Show tickets on a screen. Paper with the screen appears.
- Choose Paper and screen, or Screen first, paper if the screen is down.
- Click Save. The list shows Screen (or Screen first) in the Screen column.
- Tell the kitchen display to show it: Outlet, Outlets, Edit beside the outlet, POS terminals, Edit on the display, the Kitchen tab, then tick the station under Stations, and Save.
- Stations: the stations this screen shows. Only switched-on stations with a screen are offered.
- The line under it: what the ticks mean. None ticked shows every station with a screen.
Screen first
With Screen first, paper if the screen is down, a station's tickets normally show only on its screen. Paper prints, on the printer the outlet set for the station, when the POS is offline or the screen has not checked in for 30 seconds. An outlet with no printer for the station shows the screen only. A ticket the screen never showed is listed on Kitchen Tickets as Screen offline: not shown.
The expeditor, or pass
The pass is where a person checks each order, puts it together and calls the guest. Its station gets a copy of every ticket of every other station.
- Click + New, and make a station such as PASS, Pass.
- Tick Show tickets on a screen, so the pass has its own kitchen display.
- Tick Receives a copy of every ticket. Order is Ready when appears.
- Choose when an order turns Ready (below), and click Save. The Expeditor column says Copies all.
- On the pass's kitchen display, the Kitchen tab: tick only the pass under Stations. It takes the finished orders of every kitchen screen by itself.
If the pass's display also ticks a cooking station, the back office says: This is the expeditor's screen: it shows only the expeditor's view and takes finished orders from every kitchen screen by itself. HOT need not be ticked here.
When an order is Ready
Order is Ready when decides when an order moves from Preparing to Ready on the Order board, the screen guests watch.
| Choice | The order turns Ready | The pass's screen |
|---|---|---|
| The cook presses Done (the default) | When every cooking station with a screen has pressed Done on its dishes, as if there were no pass. | A pickup screen: Cooking (orders not all done yet, such as 2 of 3 ready) and Ready – waiting for pickup, with Collected and Call again. |
| The expeditor presses Served | When the pass presses Served on the order. | The pass's own view: Served decides, then the order waits under Waiting for pickup. |
The cook's Done is enough for most kitchens. Choose Served when somebody at the pass checks each order before the guest is called. Collected, on the pass, takes the order off every Order board at once. See The pass.
A slip when a ticket is bumped
With Print a slip when bumped ticked:
- A cooking station prints a Ready slip when its ticket is done on the kitchen display (Done, or its last dish tapped ready).
- The pass prints a Runner slip of the dishes it served, when it presses Served.
The slip prints once for each bump. A ticket recalled and done again prints again. It prints on the printer each outlet set for this station on its POS (Hardware, Printer). An outlet with no printer for the station prints no slip. The list's Slip when bumped column says Ready slip or Runner slip.
On the kitchen display, its own information lists, under Slip when bumped, where each station's slip prints, such as HOT: prints on KP2., or HOT: no printer at this outlet, so no slip prints.
