Items: Tax & charges tab

Say where an item's tax comes from. Follow Outlet, No Tax, or its own taxes ticked one by one, whether its price already includes the tax, Exempt, and where the service charge is set instead.

The Tax & charges tab answers one question about an item: which taxes the bill charges on it. There are three answers. Most restaurants leave every dish on Follow Outlet, so the outlet decides.

The service charge is not set here. This tab only shows whether the item pays it, and says where to change that.

Before you start

  • You need Items, Edit in your back office access group.
  • Your taxes must exist: General Setup, Taxes & Charges. Each outlet ticks the taxes it charges on Outlets, the outlet, Money.

Open the tab

  1. In the menu, under MASTERS, click Menu, then Items.
  2. Click the item's code (or + New item).
  3. Click the Tax & charges tab.

The tab, part by part

Tax & charges, set to Its own taxes: the box at the top says what is in force.
  1. Tax & charges: the item's second tab.
  2. In force: what the bill charges on this item, as the tab is set now, such as SST 6% — 6%, added on top of the price. Beside it, On the list: shows the label the Items list will show: SST 6% · excl (tax on top), SST 6% · incl (in the price), Outlet or No tax.
  3. The service charge line: The service charge is charged on this item., or The service charge is NOT charged on this item. It is shown, not changed, here.
  4. Follow Outlet: the item is taxed like everything else at the outlet on the bill. A box under it names each outlet and what it charges. See Follow Outlet.
  5. No Tax: the item is never taxed, at any outlet.
  6. Its own taxes: you tick the taxes this item pays. They are charged at every outlet.
  7. The taxes: one tick per tax set up in Taxes & Charges: its code, its name and its rate. Tick every one the item pays. A tax switched off in Taxes & Charges since it was ticked shows switched off: untick it to take it off the item.
  8. The price on the Pricing tab: shown once a tax is ticked. does not include the tax — it is added on top: a price of 10.00 bills 10.60 with SST 6%. already includes the tax: a price of 10.00 bills 10.00, with the tax inside it.
  9. Exempt: charges no tax on this item, though its taxes stay ticked. For an item the law exempts, when its neighbours are taxed.
  10. Service charge: says where the service charge is set: Taxes & Charges, the service charge, its Where it is not charged tab.

Follow Outlet

Choose Follow Outlet and the item pays whatever the outlet on the bill charges. Two outlets may charge different taxes: each dish set this way follows the outlet it is sold at.

Follow Outlet: the box names what each outlet charges.
  1. Follow Outlet: chosen.
  2. What each outlet charges: every outlet that is switched on, with the taxes ticked on its Money tab, and whether its prices include them. An outlet with nothing ticked says no tax.

If the item had a price setting of its own, an amber line warns that following the outlet clears it: This dish has its own setting "tax added on top of the price". Saved as Follow Outlet that is cleared, so it is taxed, and its price includes the tax or not, exactly as each outlet's Money tab says.

The item keeps its own ticks underneath. Switch it back to Its own taxes later and they are still there.

Give an item its own taxes

  1. Choose Its own taxes.
  2. Tick every tax the item pays, for example SST.
  3. In The price on the Pricing tab, say whether the item's price already includes the tax.
  4. Read In force at the top: it says what the bill will charge.
  5. Click Save.

You never choose a "tax group": the ticks are the answer. The back office keeps the set of taxes for you, and makes one when no set has exactly these taxes yet.

Make an item tax-free

  • For an item never taxed anywhere, choose No Tax.
  • For an item the law exempts while its tax stays ticked, tick Exempt: charge nothing, though the taxes are ticked. In force then says Exempt: no tax is charged on this item, though its taxes are still ticked below.

On the Items list, an exempt item's Tax cell is read only: Marked exempt on the item's Tax tab. Open the item to change it.

Take the service charge off an item

The service charge is set in one place, for all items:

  1. In the menu, under General Setup, click Taxes & Charges.
  2. Click Edit on the service charge.
  3. Click its Where it is not charged tab, and add the item (or its whole category).
  4. Click Save.

The item's Tax & charges tab then says The service charge is NOT charged on this item., and the Items list shows No svc among its flags. See Where it is not charged.

A new item's tax

A new item starts on Its own taxes with nothing ticked, which charges no tax. In a restaurant that signed up from 10 October 2026, a new item starts on Follow Outlet instead.
