Promotions: Try it

Try a promotion on a sample bill before a guest does. Add dishes, set the time each was rung, the order type, the channel, the outlet and manual discounts, and read what every promotion did, what the cashier could apply, and why the others did not apply.

Try it is at the foot of every promotion's page. You put a few dishes on a sample bill, and the cloud prices it exactly as a POS prices a real bill, with the promotion as you are editing it. Nothing is saved, nothing is sent to a POS, no bill is made.

Use it before every Create or Save: it shows the discount on each line, and for each promotion that did not apply, why.

Before you start

  • You need to see Promotions. Someone who may only look can use Try it too.
  • The dishes you try must exist in Items.

Try it, part by part

Try it: a sample bill of two lines, the bill's time, channel and outlet, then the answer.
  1. Add an item: search by name or code…: type part of a dish's name or code and click it. It joins the cart with a quantity of 1. The list shows each dish's price at the outlet.
  2. Qty: how many. More than 0.
  3. Price: blank (menu) uses the outlet's price. Type a price to try another one.
  4. Manual disc.: a discount the cashier keys on that line: none, % or amt, then the number. Use it to see Skip lines the cashier discounted by hand at work.
  5. Rung at: the time the line was rung, on the bill's day. Blank means at the bill's time. An item discount or a happy hour judges each line by this time.
  6. ✕: takes the line off the cart.
  7. Order type: Outlet default, or one of your order types. It decides the price level and whether the service charge applies (a take-away has none). It is only shown when you may read the order types.
  8. Bill time: the day and time of the bill. It starts at now. A buy X get Y or a bill total is judged at this time.
  9. Channel: POS or QR menu, as the bill would come.
  10. Outlet: the outlet the bill is at. It starts at the outlet you are working in.
  11. Manual bill disc.: a discount a manager keys on the whole bill: none, % or amt.
  12. Use this rule as edited, not as saved: ticked, the promotion as it is on the screen now, not yet saved, is tried. Untick it to try the saved one. For a promotion By the cashier, a second tick shows: As if the cashier applied it.
  13. Try it: prices the sample bill. While it works it says Trying….
  14. The sample receipt: every figure as the POS would work it out. Under each line, in green, each promotion and what it took ("(1 free)" for a free unit). Then Subtotal, Line discounts, the bill's own discounts, Manual bill discount, Service charge, each tax ("(included)" for a tax in the price), Rounding and Total. At the top, Judged at … outlet time.
  15. The cashier could apply: the promotions By the cashier that fit, each with what it saves about and needs a manager when it does. Apply puts it on the sample bill; it then moves to Applied by the cashier, with Take off.
  16. Not applied: each promotion that did not apply, with why, and its kind. When all did: Every promotion that could apply did.

Try a promotion

  1. On the promotion's page, scroll to Try it.
  2. In Add an item: search by name or code…, add two or three dishes the promotion should cover, and one it should not.
  3. For a happy hour, type a Rung at time inside the hours on one line, and outside them on another.
  4. Check Bill time, Channel and Outlet.
  5. Press Try it. Read the receipt, then Not applied.
  6. Change the promotion above, and press Try it again. You do not need to save first.

Why a promotion did not apply

Not applied says it in these words:

It saysWhat it means
switched offthe promotion is not On
another outlet's promotionit is for another outlet
not for this channel (POS or QR)its Channel leaves this one out
outside its valid datesbefore Valid from or after Valid to
outside its days or hoursnot on this day, or not at this time
the cashier has not applied itit is By the cashier: press Apply
nothing on the bill is in its scopeno dish on the bill is one it covers
the matching lines already carry a manual discountSkip lines the cashier discounted by hand kept it off
its basket price is not below the dish's own pricea basket price at or above the normal price
below its minimum spendthe bill, or its tier, is not reached
not enough units for one seta buy X get Y needs more units
earned, but the free item is not on the billadd the free dish
a higher-priority promotion already took those linesanother promotion, tried first, took them
cannot be combined with …an exclusive promotion or voucher is on the bill

Other notes the answer may show

  • Earned but not on the bill: "Burger and fries: 1 more unit could be added free. The POS offers it; it never adds one itself."
  • … cannot be combined, so nothing else was applied beside it.: an exclusive promotion took the bill.
  • A manual discount sits beside …, which is marked "cannot be combined". Manual discounts are never blocked.

What if…
