A staff category is a kind of staff member: Waiter, Senior waiter, Bartender, Promoter. Every staff member is in one.

The category is what commission is paid by. You do not give each person a rate: you give each category a rate on each item. A senior waiter and a waiter selling the same bottle of wine can earn different amounts, and a new waiter earns the right amount from their first bill.

Before you start

  • You need Staff, View to see the screen, and Staff, Edit to change it. Staff categories share the Staff right with Staff Master.

Open Staff Categories

  1. In the menu, under MASTERS, click General Setup, then Staff, then Staff Categories.
  2. The list of categories opens.

The screen, part by part

General Setup, Staff, Staff Categories.
  1. Staff Categories: under MASTERS, General Setup, in the Staff row.
  2. The line under the title: Commission rates are set per category on each item, not per person.
  3. Search…: finds a category by code or name.
  4. Show inactive: also lists switched-off categories, faded.
  5. + New: adds a category.
  6. Code: the category's short code.
  7. Name: its name, as the item's Commission tab and the Commission report show it.
  8. Status: Active or Inactive.
  9. Edit opens the category. Delete deletes it, or switches it off when it is in use.

Add a category

  1. Click + New. The window New Staff Category opens.
  2. Type a Code, such as PROMO, and a Name, such as Promoter.
  3. Give it a Display order if you want it in a set place: lower numbers come first.
  4. Click Save. The big green SAVED shows.
New Staff Category: a code, a name and its place in the list.
  1. Code: required, different from every other category's.
  2. Name: required.
  3. Display order: 0 or more. The order the categories are listed in, on the item's Commission tab and under each name on the POS's staff list.
  4. Active: ticked, the category is in use.

How commission uses a category

  1. Put each staff member in a category: Staff Master, Edit, Category.
  2. On each item that earns commission, open its Commission tab, tick This item earns commission, and give each category its rate. See Items: Commission tab.
  3. On the POS, the staff member who served the line is recorded with it.
  4. The Commission report adds it up, by staff member, with their category beside their name.
An item's Commission tab: one row per staff category.
  1. Staff category: every switched-on category is a row, in display order. A category left unticked earns nothing on this item.

A refund takes the commission back, from whoever sold what it gives back, on the day of the refund.

Change, switch off or delete a category

  • Edit, change the code, name or display order, then Save.
  • Untick Active to switch it off.
  • Delete asks Delete "Promoter"?, If it has already been used it will be deactivated instead, so existing records stay intact. A category that staff are in, or that an item has a commission rate for, is switched off instead: Deactivated — still used by staff or Deactivated — still used by commission rules.
