A unit of measure says how an item is counted: by the Plate, the Bottle, the Piece, the Kilogram. You give each item its unit on the item itself; this list is where the units come from.

A restaurant that started with the sample menu has four: PCS Piece, PLATE Plate, GLASS Glass and BTL Bottle.

Before you start

  • You need Units of Measure, View to see the screen, and Units of Measure, Edit to change it (Back office access groups).

Open Units of Measure

  1. In the menu, under MASTERS, click General Setup, then Units of Measure.
  2. The page Units of Measure opens.

The screen, part by part

General Setup, Units of Measure: how items are counted.
  1. Units of Measure: under MASTERS, in General Setup.
  2. Search…: finds a unit by its code or name. Show inactive beside it lists the switched-off ones too, greyed.
  3. + New: adds a unit.
  4. Code: the short code, such as KG. The stock screens show it beside a quantity.
  5. Decimals: the unit's Decimal places.
  6. Status: Active, or Inactive for one switched off.
  7. Edit and Delete.

Add a unit

  1. Click + New. The window New Units of Measure opens.
  2. Type a Code, such as KG, and a Name, such as Kilogram.
  3. Type its Decimal places: 0 for a unit counted whole, up to 3.
  4. Click Save. The big green SAVED shows.
New Units of Measure: a code, a name, and how precisely it is counted.
  1. Code: required, and different from every other unit's.
  2. Name: required. The lists show a unit as its code and its name, such as KG — Kilogram.
  3. Decimal places: 0 to 3. How precisely this unit is counted. 0 for plates, 3 for kilograms. It is kept with the unit as a note; today no screen rounds or limits a quantity by it.
  4. Display order: the order on the list and in the pickers.
  5. Active: Available for use. Unticked, the unit is no longer offered in the item and ingredient pickers.

Where a unit is used

  • Items: an item's Unit, on its General tab. It is the unit the item is counted in for stock. See Items: add an item.
  • An item's Ingredients tab: each ingredient line has a Unit, its own unit to begin with. Leave it at its own unit: a line in another unit is taken off stock only when the ingredient knows how many of its own unit that unit holds, and the back office has no screen to set that yet. See Items: Ingredients tab.
  • Stock: stock documents, counts and the stock reports count each item in its own unit, and show the unit's code beside the quantity.

Change, switch off or delete a unit

  • Edit, change it, Save.
  • Untick Active to stop offering it.
  • Delete asks Delete "Kilogram"?, If it has already been used it will be deactivated instead, so existing records stay intact. A unit on an item, a recipe or a stock document is switched off instead: Deactivated — still used by items (or recipes, or stock documents).
