Unpair a POS with a one-time code

How a POS is unpaired, since there is no Unpair button on it. A one-time Unpair code from the back office, typed in the Staff code box of the POS's sign-in screen; the POS sends what it holds first and asks Unpair this POS?; what is kept on the device; and every message on the way.

There is no Unpair button and no Pair again button on the POS. Unpairing a POS is a manager's job, so nobody at the counter can take a till off its pairing, by accident or on purpose. A POS is unpaired with a one-time unpair code from the back office, typed on the POS's own sign-in screen.

Unpair a POS when the device is to stop being that POS: to give it another job, to change its platform or operation mode in the back office (both are locked while it is paired), or before you give the device away. The POS sends everything it can to the cloud first, then lets go of its pairing.

Before you start

  • The POS is paired, and you can stand at it.
  • The POS is on the internet. Unpairing needs it.
  • You are signed in to the back office as the owner or a manager.
  • Nobody needs to sign in on the POS: the code goes in the sign-in screen's Staff code box.

Part 1: get the code in the back office

  1. In the back office's menu, under MASTERS, click Outlet, then Outlets.
  2. Click Edit on the outlet's row, then the POS terminals tab.
  3. Click ⋯ at the end of the POS's row.
  4. Click Unpair code. The window Unpair code for T02 (the POS's code) opens with the code.

Unpair code is in the menu only for a POS that a device is paired to now. A POS waiting for its pairing code to be typed says Type the code on the POS to pair it. there instead.

The one-time unpair code, shown once.
  1. Which POS: the code works on this POS only (its name, here Bar till).
  2. The code: four digits, a dash, then eight letters and digits. There is no O, I or L and no 0 or 1 after the dash, so it can be read out over the phone.
  3. Works until: the time it stops working, by your browser's clock: 30 minutes after it was made.
  4. What to do with it: the instructions, word for word.
  5. Shown once: the code is kept nowhere but here. Once you close the window nobody can see it again. Lost? Make a new one: the new one stops this one.
  6. Done: closes the window. Nothing is unpaired yet: the POS lets go only when the code is typed on it.

Part 2: type the code on the POS

  1. Go to the POS. If somebody is signed in, log out: ⚙, Log out. The POS shows Sign in.
  2. If the card shows the PIN pad, tap Use a password instead: the code needs the Staff code box.
  3. In Staff code, type the code exactly as shown, with its dash: 4821-K7QM3XTP. Small letters are fine.
  4. Leave Password empty. Sign in works without it for an unpair code.
  5. Tap Sign in, or press Enter.
The unpair code in the Staff code box of the sign-in screen (Windows).
  1. Staff code: the unpair code goes here. The POS knows a code of this shape: it is never tried as a staff code.
  2. Password: leave it empty.
  3. Sign in: blue as soon as the code is in. It does not sign anybody in: it starts the unpairing.

Unpair this POS?

First the POS checks that it can reach the cloud. Then it sends everything it has not sent yet, as far as it will go. The window says Sending what this POS has not sent yet… while it does. Then it asks.

The question, after the POS has sent what it could.
  1. What happens: this POS stops being paired and goes to the pairing screen.
  2. What has not reached the cloud: Everything rung up on this POS has reached the cloud., or how many bills and changes are still waiting, and what becomes of them (below).
  3. Cancel: nothing is sent and nothing changes. The POS stays paired, on the sign-in screen. The code stays usable until its time is up.
  4. Unpair: in red. Sends the code to the cloud. It says Unpairing… while it waits. Only when the cloud says yes does the POS let go of its pairing.

After unpairing

  • The POS opens on Set up this POS, the pairing screen. To use the device again, get a new pairing code in the back office and type it there. See Set up this POS.
  • In the back office, the POS's row says Not paired. Its Platform and Operation mode can be changed again under Edit.
  • Nothing on the device is deleted. Its bills and anything not sent stay in its own database:
    • paired again as the same POS of the same restaurant, it sends them as soon as it is paired;
    • paired as another POS, or to another restaurant, it keeps them, lists them on the table screen, and never sends them there. See Notices at sign-in.
On Android

Everything is the same on Android. Tap Staff code and type the code with the tablet's keyboard. The question Unpair this POS? looks like Android's own windows: Cancel on the left, Unpair in red on the right.
