The customer display: what the guest sees

The second screen facing the guest, part by part. The top bar with the logo and welcome words, the adverts or the restaurant's picture, the order with its QTY, Description and Total, the totals, Total due, Paid and Balance at Pay, Thank you and the change, and the Welcome screen between guests.

The customer display is a second screen on a Main or Sub POS that faces the guest. While the cashier rings up a bill, the guest sees each dish appear on it, with the total. At Pay they see what is due and what they paid, and when the bill is paid, Thank you and their change. Between guests it shows your advertisements, your picture, or Welcome.

The guest only reads it. Nothing on it can be pressed.

This guide shows what the guest sees, moment by moment. To switch it on, see Turn the customer display on at the POS; what it shows (the look, your logo, your adverts) is set in the back office, see POS terminals: Customer display tab.

The screen is three strips

On every look and every moment, the screen is the same three strips. Nothing is ever drawn over the two bars:

  • The top bar: your own logo at the left (the FooodPos logo when you have none), then your welcome words on one line, such as Welcome to Kopitiam Demo.
  • The middle: the order, your adverts, your picture, the thank-you or the welcome.
  • The bottom bar: Powered by FooodPos and the FooodPos logo. It cannot be changed.

While a bill is rung up

The customer display during a bill, in the Split look: the advert on the left, the order on the right.
  1. The top bar: your logo and your welcome words. Words too long for the bar end with "…".
  2. Your advertisement: in the Split look, your photos and videos play on one half, beside the order (videos without sound). With no advert, your picture takes that half. In Full screen the order takes the whole middle; in Background it sits over your picture, dimmed so the words read.
  3. The heading: the table, such as Table T6. With no table, the order type, such as Take Away. With neither, Your order.
  4. QTY, Description, Total: the headings of the dishes box. They stay in place while the dishes move under them.
  5. A dish: its quantity, its name, and under the name its second-language name, its choices (never the cashier's free-text note), and for a dish sold by weight the sum, such as 0.395 kg × 15.00 = 5.93. Under it, what came off it: a promotion by its name, Free ×1 (Buy 2 Get 1) for a free unit with the promotion's name, or Discount for the cashier's own. Two identical lines are one row with their quantity added. A newly rung dish slides in and is lit for a moment; a quantity that changes pulses; a removed dish fades away.
  6. The totals box: Subtotal, then each promotion and voucher on the whole bill by its name, Discount (every discount together), Service charge, your own charges by their names, each tax added on top by its name, and Rounding. A line that is zero is left out. A tax already inside the prices is not a line: it shows as Includes SST RM 1.20 under the total.
  7. Total: what the bill comes to, large, with the currency before it, such as RM 41.10.
  8. The bottom bar: Powered by FooodPos.

At Pay

When the cashier opens the payment screen, three lines join the total:

At Pay: what is due, what is paid, and the balance.
  1. Total due: what the bill comes to.
  2. Paid: what has been taken on the bill so far. An amount appears here once the cashier takes it, never while it is still being typed.
  3. Balance: what is still to pay, in amber. It never goes below zero.

When the bill is paid

Paid: the tick, Thank you, and the change.
  1. Thank you: a green tick grows in and confetti falls, for about a second and a half, then the tick and Thank you stay. On a screen with animations switched off, they are simply there.
  2. The figures: Total, Paid, and Change when there is change to give.

The thank-you stays at least 5 seconds and at most 15. It ends at once when the next bill gets its first dish: the guest in front of the screen is the next one. A bill paid without the internet looks exactly the same: the POS saves it and sends it later.

Between guests

Between guests, with no advert and no picture: Welcome and the outlet's name.
  1. Welcome: shown when there is nothing else to show.
  2. The outlet's name, under it.

What the guest never sees

  • Only the bill open on this POS's own order or payment screen. Any other screen of the POS (the tables, a report, the settings) shows the between-guests screen. Another POS's bill never reaches it.
  • A bill with nothing rung on it yet: the adverts keep playing until the first dish.
  • A voided dish, a free-text note (it may hold a phone number), who served or sold, a void or discount reason, and words such as "not sent".
  • What the cashier is still typing at Pay.

The language

The customer display speaks the POS's default language, not the cashier's own: the person reading it is the guest. It is the Default POS language of the POS's terminal setting. See POS Terminal Settings: General. Dish names are shown as typed in the back office, with their second name under them.
