When sign-in is refused

Every message the POS sign-in screen can show and what to do. A wrong PIN or password, the wait after too many, a PIN that cannot be used, a POS that needs the internet once, and a person signed out by the cloud, on Windows and Android.

When a sign-in does not go through, the card says why, above the form, and clears the password or PIN box. The staff code stays, so you only type the secret again.

Most refusals are decided on the POS, with no internet: a wrong PIN or password, and the wait after too many. A few need the cloud, and say so.

Where the message shows

A refusal on Windows: in red, between the POS's name and the form.
  1. The message: red for a refusal. On Windows, something to know rather than a refusal (such as who the cloud signed out) is amber; on Android every message is in a red box.
  2. Staff code: kept as typed.
  3. Password (or PIN): emptied. Type it again.

The message goes when you switch forms, or when you sign in. A wait goes by itself when it is over.

A wrong PIN or password

A right code that is still refused

The POS keeps a list of who may sign in at this POS, from the cloud. A person who is not on it is refused with the same words as a wrong secret, so nobody can find out which codes are real by trying:

  • The person is switched off in the back office (POS users, Active, may sign in not ticked).
  • Their Outlets do not include this POS's outlet, or that outlet is switched off.
  • They are a back office user (who signs in with an email address). Only POS users sign in on a POS.
  • They are an administrator keying a PIN. An administrator signs in with the staff code and password.
  • Their PIN or password was set or changed in the back office a moment ago, and this POS is offline. When the internet is there, the POS asks the cloud for its list once more before it calls a PIN or password wrong, so a new one works at once. Offline, it works from the POS's next update.

Too many wrong tries

The POS counts wrong tries itself, on the device, so the wait holds with no internet too.

CountWhen it waitsWhat waits
A staff code5 wrong tries for that code, PINs and passwords togetherThat code only. Others can sign in.
This POS's PIN pad5 wrong PINs on this POS within 15 minutes, whoever they were forEvery PIN on this POS: the pad, a staff code and PIN, a manager's approval. A staff code and password still sign in.

The first wait is 30 seconds. Each further wrong try doubles it, up to five minutes. It counts down on the card as minutes and seconds, and Sign in stays grey until it is over. A right PIN or password clears a code's count; nothing but time clears the PIN pad's.

A PIN that cannot be used

Signed out by the cloud

You are in the moment the POS has checked your PIN or password. Behind you, the POS asks the cloud to confirm the sign-in. If the cloud turns it down, the POS signs you out and says why on the sign-in screen, until somebody signs in.

Somebody the cloud signed out (Windows: amber, above the form).
  1. Who, and why: the person's name, and the cloud's reason in brackets. With a password, the line says If the password was changed, sign in with the new one. instead.
