No shift is open
On a POS that sells only with a shift open, the table screen is dimmed under Open a shift to start selling until one is. What still works under the cover, opening the shift with its float, the same cover over a bill, and the other covers - a Sub waiting for its Main's shift, and a day end that is overdue. On the Windows and the Android POS.

A shift is a cash drawer's working day: its opening float, its cash in and out, its count at the close. On a POS set to sell only with a shift open, nothing is sold until one is. With no shift open, the table screen is dimmed and greyed under one box that says so, with the one button that opens a shift.
It works offline: a shift is opened on this POS first and sent to the cloud after.
Before you start
- The rule is set in the back office: POS Terminal Settings, the setting, Selling, A shift must be open to sell. It is on for a new restaurant. See POS Terminal Settings: Selling.
- It applies to a Main or Sub POS that takes money. A Waiter POS has no drawer and no shift, and is never covered; neither is a POS whose May take payment is off.
- To open a shift you need the right, Shift Open/Close, or a manager's code and PIN.
The cover, part by part
Open a shift to start selling
- Open a shift to start selling: why the floor is closed. Under the box, the tables, the floor tabs and the orders panel are dimmed, greyed, and take no tap.
- The line: No shift is open on this POS. Nothing can be sold until one is: count the drawer and open it.
- Open shift: opens the shift sheet over this same dimmed screen. See Open the shift.
- Open shift in the bar, red and ringed: the same sheet. With a shift open it is Shift again.
- ⚙ Settings, and the rest of the top bar: still work, so nobody is trapped: Log out, Exit POS, Hardware, 🔄, ⏰ Clock in / out (someone arriving clocks in before the shift is opened), the language and Day / Night.
- Day end: still works on a POS that may run it: a day still closes at night after its last shift.
- Quick sale and every other key: greyed out until a shift is open. Quick sale's hover words say why.
Nothing under the cover can be reached by the keyboard either: Tab, Enter and a barcode scanner's Enter go nowhere under it.
Open the shift
- Press Open shift, on the cover or in the bar.
- The sheet says Open a shift to start selling and No shift is open on this POS. Count the drawer and open one. It works now, even offline.
- Count the cash in the drawer and key it in Opening float (RM). The button at the box's right end opens the number pad.
- Press Open shift. The cover lifts at once, and the floor is yours.
If your access group may not open shifts, the sheet says Only someone with Shift Open/Close can open a shift — a manager's code and PIN will do. A manager keys their code and PIN in the boxes under it, then presses Open shift. See Open a shift.
When the cover was reached with the last shift's slip still kept, the sheet offers The last shift’s slip at its foot: it takes you to the Shift screen to print it.
The cover and the sheet are the same, with the same words. The floor under the cover is faded rather than greyed, and takes no touch. On a phone held sideways the box scrolls.
The same cover over a bill
When a shift closes while a bill is open on the sales screen, the same cover is laid over the sales screen, with Open shift and a second button, ← Tables (on a POS set to Sales screen only, ☰ Bills), the one other way off it. The bill stays as it is, and can be finished once a shift is open.
