Replace a broken Main POS
Put a new device in the place of a Main POS that is broken or lost, without pairing its Sub and Waiter POS again. Replace this Main POS in the back office, the new device's This POS replaces T01. Restore its backup copy?, Choose the copy, Go on without a copy, the steps that bring the Main POS back, what can be lost, and every message.
On this page
When the device of a Main POS breaks, is stolen or will not start, a new device can take its place as the same POS: same code, same bills, same shifts, and every Sub and Waiter POS linked to it stays linked and finds the new device by itself. Nobody else pairs again.
It takes three parts:
- In the back office, Replace this Main POS gives a pairing code for the new device.
- On the new device, type the code on Set up this POS.
- The new device asks whether to restore the old Main POS's backup copy, then brings the Main POS back from the cloud.
Before you start
- You are signed in to the back office as the owner or a manager.
- FooodPos is installed on the new device, of the same kind as the old one (Windows or Android). See Download and install the POS app.
- The new device is on the internet.
- If the old Main POS kept a backup copy, have it ready: on Windows the drive it was kept on (a USB drive or a second disk), on Android the SD card or USB stick. See Backup copy (Main POS).
Part 1: Replace this Main POS in the back office
- Open Outlets, click Edit on the outlet's row, then the POS terminals tab.
- Click ⋯ on the Main POS's row.
- Click Replace this Main POS (in red). It is there only for a switched-on Main POS that a device is paired to.
- The browser's own window asks the question below. Type the POS's code, such as T01, and click OK.
- The Pairing code window shows a code for the new device. It works once, for 24 hours.
- What it does: the old device stops being T01 at once; the POS linked to it stay linked; where the open bills come from. A Main POS that keeps a backup copy says instead: Open bills come back from the cloud's copy, and from T01's backup copy if you restore one on the new device. Anything T01 had not sent to the cloud, and that is on no backup copy, is lost with the old device.
- The box: type the POS's code to go on.
- OK: replaces the POS and shows the new pairing code. Cancel changes nothing.
Part 2: pair the new device
- Open FooodPos on the new device. It opens on Set up this POS.
- Type the code in Pairing code, and tap Pair this POS. See Set up this POS.
- Instead of Sign in, the new device shows the replacement screen (Part 3). Until it has finished, it serves nobody: no sales, and no Sub or Waiter POS is answered.
Part 3: the new device brings the Main POS back
Restore its backup copy?
Where the old Main POS kept a backup copy, the new device asks first. (Where it never kept one, there is nothing to choose: the screen says This POS replaces T01. Its open bills come from the cloud. and goes straight on to the steps below.)
This POS replaces T01. Restore its backup copy?
Choose the copy1Go on without a copy2- Choose the copy: looks for backup copies on this PC's drives (Looking for backup copies on this PC's drives…) and lists them.
- Go on without a copy: the open bills come from the cloud. Choose it when there is no copy, or the old drive is lost too.
- What can be lost: the two grey lines say it plainly. If the old Main POS had the internet when it died, at most its last few seconds of work; if it had none, everything since it last reached the cloud, unless a backup copy holds it.
Choose the copy
This POS replaces T01. Restore its backup copy?
- The copy: when it was made, its size, and the drive it is on.
- What the rule says of it: This copy can be restored., or why it cannot (see What if).
- Restore this copy: only on a copy that may be restored.
- A copy that may not be restored: greyed, with the reason in amber, and no button.
- Back: back to the question.
- Search again: looks again, after you plug in a drive.
- Go on without a copy: the open bills come from the cloud.
- Plug in the drive that was in the old Main POS, then tap Choose the copy (or Search again).
- Tap Restore this copy on the copy of this POS, normally the newest.
- If the new device already holds work of its own, it asks first: This POS holds work of its own: 3 not yet sent to the cloud and 2 open bills. Restoring the copy sets them aside: they are kept on this POS, but they are not sent. Tap Restore the copy anyway, or Back.
- Restoring the backup copy… Do not switch this POS off. The POS then opens again by itself on the restored copy, and goes on to the steps below.
Bringing T01 back
Then the POS works through five steps, with the internet, ticking each off: Bringing T01 back. Nothing can be sold on this POS until this has finished.
Bringing T01 back. Nothing can be sold on this POS until this has finished.
T01 is back on this POS.
- The steps: the settings, the open bills, the open shifts, the bill numbers, and what the copy had not sent. Done steps are ticked in green; the one under way is bold.
- What came back: open bills taken from the cloud, brought up to the cloud's, or closed because the cloud had closed them; then the shifts taken over, and anything still to be sent (it goes by itself). A Sub POS whose shift could not be matched says T02's shift could not be matched with the cloud's. Close it from this POS's Shift screen.
- The others: every Sub and Waiter POS finds the new Main POS by itself.
- Continue: on to Sign in. From here this device is T01.
The Android card is titled Replace the Main POS and asks the same question, with one more line: Put the SD card or USB stick that was in T01 into this device, then choose it. Without a copy, its open bills come from the cloud.
- Choose the copy opens Android's own folder picker: choose the card or stick. The newest copy that may be restored is offered, such as Copy of 23 Oct 21:58:02 · 48.2 MB, with Restore this copy. Where none may be, the newest file says why, or No backup copy was found there. Choose the card or stick that was in T01.
- If the tablet holds work of its own: This POS holds 3 unsent pieces of work and 2 open bills. Restoring the copy sets them aside: they stay on this device and are not sent., with Not now and Restore, and set them aside.
- After the restore: The copy is ready. FooodPos closes and opens again by itself to finish. If it does not, open FooodPos again., with Close FooodPos.
- A copy that could not be opened: The backup copy was not restored. This POS is as it was.
- On a phone, the buttons stand one under another.
There is no Unpair and no Pair again on any of these screens: a pairing is changed only with a code from the back office.
