Cash and change
Take cash and give the right change. The quick notes 5, 10, 50 and 100, a double tap on a method for the exact amount, what Payment Amt and Take say, Change to give on the Paid screen, and when the cash drawer opens by itself. On the Windows and the Android POS.
On this page
Most bills are paid in cash. The POS works out the change for you: key what the guest hands over, and the window shows the change before you take it, and again in large figures once the bill is paid. The cash drawer opens by itself the moment the cash is taken.
Before you start
- Your cash method gives change. In the back office, the Cash payment method has Gives change and Opens cash drawer ticked. Every new restaurant starts with it so. See Payment Methods.
- The drawer is plugged into the receipt printer. The POS opens it through the printer. On the POS, Settings, Hardware, Drawer has the switch Open the drawer by itself when cash is taken. See The cash drawer.
The cash keys, part by part
- Cash: chosen when the window opens (the first cash method of the POS's buttons; with none, the first method). Tap it twice quickly (within less than half a second) to key the exact amount still due into Payment Amt. A double tap only fills the box: it never takes the money.
- Payment Amt: what this payment takes. Empty means the exact amount due. Keyed, it turns amber. Above the balance, the change shows beside it.
- The keypad: 0 to 9, the point and ⌫. Money has two decimal places: a third digit after the point, or a second point, does nothing.
- 5, 10, 50, 100: the note the guest hands over. One tap puts that amount in Payment Amt; it does not add to what is there. A tap on 50 and then 10 leaves 10.
- Clear: empties Payment Amt, to key again.
- Take: takes the payment. It says what it takes: Take RM 45.00 for the exact amount, Take RM 50.00 when 50 is handed over.
The keyboard works too. Payment Amt has the keyboard as soon as the window opens: type 50 and press Enter, and it is taken as Take would. Enter does nothing while Take is grey.
Take cash with change
- Open the payment window. Cash is chosen.
- Tap the note the guest hands over (50), or key the amount (5, 0). Payment Amt shows 50.00, and beside it CHANGE 5.00.
- Check the change, and press Take RM 50.00. The drawer opens.
- The window shows Paid and Change to give RM 5.00, in large figures. Give the change and close the drawer.
- Change to give RM 5.00: the change, as large as the screen allows. With no change it says No change to give.
- Exit (10): back to the tables. It counts down from 10 and leaves by itself.
- Cash 50.00 on the receipt: what the guest handed over.
- Change 5.00: the change given. The bill records RM 45.00 paid.
When the cash drawer opens
The drawer opens the moment the cash payment is saved on this POS, before anything is sent to the cloud. It opens with the internet down too.
| What happens | The drawer |
|---|---|
| A cash payment is taken | Opens, once. |
| Part cash, part card | Opens once, for the cash. |
| Two cash payments on one bill | Opens twice, as each is taken. |
| A card or e-wallet payment | Stays shut. |
| A bill closed with nothing to pay | Stays shut. |
| A receipt printed again, Exit, the Paid screen shown again | Stays shut. |
| A cash payment taken back from an open bill | Opens, to hand the money back. |
When it did not open, one grey line says why, under the amount due or on the Paid screen:
- The cash drawer did not open: no receipt printer is set on this POS.
- The cash drawer did not open: the printer did not answer.
Open it by hand from Settings, Hardware, Drawer, Open the drawer. The payment is taken either way: the drawer never holds up the money.
On Android
The keys are the same: the quick notes, the double tap, Clear and Take. The differences:
- Under the keyed amount the box says CHANGE 5.00. Keyed at exactly what is due, it says EXACT.
- A keyboard plugged into the tablet types into Payment Amt, and Enter takes, as on Windows.
- The Paid screen says Change to hand back over the change. With no change, nothing is said about it.
- The drawer's lines are the same, and one more: The cash drawer did not open: this tablet may not use the printer yet. Print a receipt and choose Allow.
- Change to hand back RM 5.00: the change, in large figures.
