Order type and service type
What kind of order a bill is (Dine In, Take Away, Delivery), where a new bill gets it, how to change it from the sales screen and what that re-prices, and how to mark one dish to be served another way with the line's Service type. On the Windows and the Android POS.
On this page
Every bill has an order type: Dine In, Take Away, Delivery, or whatever your restaurant has set up. It decides whether the bill pays the service charge and, for some order types, the prices it sells at.
A single dish can also be served another way than its bill, for example one dish to take away at a dine-in table. That is the dish's service type. It changes no price: it only tells the kitchen and whoever packs the order.
Before you start
- The order types are set up in the back office, in Order Types: the name, whether it Needs a table, the Service charge tick and any Price level override. See Order Types.
- A bill's order type can be changed only before any money is taken on it.
- A dish's service type can be changed only before the dish is sent to the kitchen.
Where a new bill gets its order type
The POS never asks when a bill opens. It opens on a default, in one tap:
- At a table: the table's own Default order type (set in the back office's Table Plan), else the first order type that needs a table.
- Away from a table (a quick sale at the counter): the POS's Default order type (set on the POS terminal in the back office). See Orders & payments.
If the default is wrong for this guest, change it on the sales screen, as below.
On the sales screen
The order type is a button on the top line, beside the bill's name.
- Take Away ▾: the bill's order type, as your back office names it. Tap it to change it.
- Who served? ▾: who serves the bill. See Who served, and sold by.
Change the bill's order type
- On the sales screen, tap the order type on the top line (Take Away ▾).
- A window opens, titled with the bill's name (Quick sale, Table T6). It lists the order types this bill can be.
- Tap the one you want. The window closes.
- The whole bill is priced again at once: the service charge, and the prices if the new order type has its own price list. The bill says what changed, for example Take Away → Delivery. No service charge. This bill is now RM 22.50.
- The bill's name: which bill you are changing.
- What kind of order is this?: the warning. The whole bill is priced again, on this POS and on the cloud, and it cannot be changed once money has been taken.
- The order type the bill is on now: outlined in blue, with · this bill now. Under each name: Service charge applies or No service charge. A second-language name, when the back office has one, shows under the name.
- An order type with its own price list: says which, for example · Delivery prices. A bill moved to it sells at those prices.
- Cancel: closes the window and changes nothing.
Which order types are listed
Only the ones that fit the bill:
- A bill at a table lists only the order types that need a table. In most restaurants that is Dine In alone, so a table's bill stays Dine In. To pack one dish to take away, use the dish's Service type (below).
- A bill at no table lists only the order types that need no table: Take Away, Counter, Delivery, and so on.
- A QR order type is never offered here. The QR ordering pages use it by themselves.
The order type is a framed button on the top line: its name, with Service charge applies or No service charge under it. On a wide screen a Change key sits inside it too. Tap anywhere on it.
The window is the same, as a list: the bill's name, What kind of order is this? The whole bill is re-priced, and a bill with money on it cannot be moved., each order type on its own row, and Cancel across the foot. The one the bill is on says · what this bill is on now. After the change, the bill says, for example, Delivery: no service charge. The bill has been re-priced.
- The order type button: the name, what it charges and, on a wide screen, Change.
- The order type the bill is on now: outlined in blue.
One dish served another way: Service type
A family at Table T6 eats in, but wants one Nasi Lemak packed to take home. The bill stays Dine In; only that dish is marked Take Away.
- On the bill, tap the dish. Its window opens beside the bill.
- Press Service type.
- A window asks How is this item served? with Only this item. Its price, tax and service charge stay the bill's. It lists every order type this POS has, the bill's own first.
- Tap Take Away. The window closes.
- The dish now carries a blue Take Away tag on the bill and in its window.
- Press Save & Fire. The kitchen ticket says ** TAKE AWAY ** under the dish.
- Take Away: the dish's own service type, in a blue tag. A dish served the bill's way has no tag.
- Service type: opens the window on the right.
- The service types: every order type this POS has. The bill's own is first, marked (this bill); the dish's present one is outlined in blue. No service charge or price is said here, because none changes.
- ✕: closes the dish's window. A tap anywhere on the menu side closes it too.
To put the dish back to the bill's way, open its window again, press Service type and tap the bill's own order type, marked (this bill). The tag goes.
What the service type changes, and what it does not
- No money moves. The dish's price, tax and service charge stay what the bill's order type makes them. Reports count it under the bill's order type.
- The kitchen ticket says ** TAKE AWAY ** on a line of its own under the dish, in bold. The kitchen display shows it the same way, heavier than a modifier.
- The bill and the receipt print (Take Away) under the dish.
- Two of the same dish with different service types stay two lines on the bill. They are never merged.
- ** TAKE AWAY **: on the kitchen ticket, under the dish.
- (Take Away): on the bill and the receipt, under the dish.
The dish's window has the same buttons, and Service type is drawn in blue while the dish has a service type of its own. The window lists the service types one per row, under How is this item served? and Only this item. Its price, tax and service charge stay the bill's., with Cancel at the foot. When Service type cannot be used, the window itself says why, in an amber box.
