Second-language names on the POS
The second name a dish, category, choice, order type or payment method has in the back office (often Chinese), where the POS shows it, the menu's five ways to show it on the tiles, why it does not follow the POS's language button, and what prints. On the Windows and the Android POS, the kitchen display and the kiosk.
On this page
A dish can have two names in the back office: its name (Nasi Lemak Ayam) and a second-language name (椰浆饭). Where the second name is set, the POS shows it, so a cashier or a cook who reads either language finds the dish.
The second name is the restaurant's own data, typed in the back office. The POS shows it whatever language its screen is in: the language button changes the POS's own words, never your dishes' names.
Before you start
The second names are typed in the back office, in the Second language box of each:
- Items: on the dish's General tab. See Items: add an item.
- Categories, Modifiers (each group and each choice), Order Types and Payment Methods.
- Menu Designer: a menu button can have its own Second line, under its Label. It wins over the dish's second name on that button.
Every POS takes them at its next sync. A thing with no second name looks exactly as it always did.
Where the POS shows them
| Where | What shows |
|---|---|
| The dish tiles of the menu | The button's Second line, else the dish's second name. How, is the menu's choice (below). |
| The menu's page tabs, and the categories of the plain list | The page's or the category's second name. |
| The choices window (modifiers) and the set meal window | The dish's, each group's and each choice's second name. |
| The order type window | Each order type's second name, under its name. |
| The payment window | Each payment method's second name, under its name. |
| The item search list | The dish's second name, in the small grey line after its code and barcode. |
| Last bill | A kept receipt's dish lines with their second names. |
| The kitchen display | The dish's second name under the dish, on the ticket and in the Summary. |
| The kiosk and the customer display | The dish's (and the kiosk's category's) second name under its name. |
Where it does not show: the bill on the sales screen keeps each dish's main name, as the paper does. A second name that is empty, or the same as the name, shows nothing: nothing is shown twice.
The menu's choice: Names on the POS
On the dish tiles, the page tabs and the choices windows, the menu itself decides which name shows and how big. It is Names on the POS, in the back office's Menu Designer, Menu settings. See Menu Designer: Menu settings.
- Second name only: the second name alone, at normal size. Every menu starts on this choice. A restaurant that fills in Chinese names sees Chinese on its tiles.
- Main name only: the main name alone, as if there were no second name.
- Both names, same size: the main name, then the second, both at normal size. A long main name keeps its lines first.
- Main name normal, second name small: the main name, and the second smaller under it.
- Main name small, second name normal: the main name smaller, the second at normal size under it.
- A dish, page or choice with no second name always shows its main name at normal size, whatever the choice.
- On a small tile, the names are fitted to the room the tile has: with Both names, same size, the second name gives way first.
- The choice covers the dish tiles, the page tabs, the plain list and the choices and set windows. The order type window and the payment methods always show the name with the second name smaller under it.
- A POS that shows a menu of its own follows that menu's choice. One that shows all menus follows the default menu's.
In the order type and payment windows
- Take Away, with 外带 under it: the order type's name, then its second name, then what it charges.
The payment methods show their second names the same way, under the name on each method's button: Cash with 现金 under it.
On the kitchen display
- Nasi Lemak Ayam, and 椰浆饭 under it: the cook reads either. The Summary lists the second name under each dish too.
The POS language and the second names
The POS's language button (EN, 中文, BM) changes the POS's own words: buttons, titles, messages. It never changes the names your restaurant typed:
- A cashier on 中文 still sees the dish as the back office named it, with its second name where the menu shows one.
- A cashier on EN sees the Chinese second names too, if the menu shows them.
To show only one language on the tiles, choose Main name only or Second name only for the menu.
Chinese is drawn in Microsoft YaHei, whatever language the screen is in, so a Chinese second name looks right on an English screen.
Android draws a second name written in Chinese with Simplified Chinese letter shapes, whatever language the screen is in.
What prints
Nothing on paper comes from the POS's screen. The receipt, the bill, the kitchen ticket and the master slip print the main name, and a second name only where their print format has it switched on: Item second name on the receipt, the bill and the master slip, Dish second name on the kitchen ticket. See Print Formats and Print Formats: kitchen ticket.
The words round them on paper (TOTAL, TABLE) are always English, whatever the POS's language.
