Reference numbers
The reference box beside Payment Amt. Reference for Visa · required (amber) or · optional, Enter the reference first, typing it with the keypad, a keyboard, a scanner or ABC, and where the reference goes after: the Payments tab, the cloud and the receipt. On the Windows and the Android POS.

A card slip, a DuitNow transfer or a third-party voucher has a number of its own: an approval code, a transaction id. The reference box beside Payment Amt keeps that number on the payment, so the payment can be matched to the slip at cash-up, in reports and when a payment is taken back.
Every method has the box. For some methods the reference is required: the POS will not take the payment until it is keyed. For the rest it is optional.
Before you start
- Which methods need a reference is set in the back office: Needs a reference (Approval code or transaction id) on the payment method. See Payment Methods.
- A method linked to a card terminal or to iPay88 gets its reference from the terminal's or iPay88's answer: there is nothing to key. See Card terminal payments.
The reference box, part by part
- The method: choosing another method starts its reference box empty. A reference is never carried from one payment to the next.
- Payment Amt: the ring starts here, for every method, so the keypad keys the amount first.
- The reference box: Reference for Visa · required, amber while it is empty, for a method that needs one. Reference for Cash · optional, white, for the others. Inside it, Visa reference number until something is typed. Once a required reference is typed, the box turns plain and · required goes. ABC (Windows) calls up the on-screen keyboard, for a reference with letters.
- The keypad: types into the box with the ring. Tap the reference box to move the ring there; the keypad then types digits only, and the point is grey.
- Clear: empties only the box being filled: the reference while its ring is on it, the amount otherwise.
- Enter the reference first: Take is grey until a required reference is typed. Then it says Take RM 45.00 again.
Key a reference
- Choose the method, for example Visa. The reference box turns amber if it needs one.
- Leave Payment Amt empty for the whole amount, or key the part this method pays.
- Tap the reference box. The ring moves to it.
- Key the number on the keypad: 0, 0, 4, 5, 1, 2. Or type it on a keyboard, or scan it.
- Press Take RM 45.00.
On Windows, Enter or Tab in the reference box puts the ring back on Payment Amt; so does a tap on a method or on the amount box. A reference keeps at most 60 characters.
- Reference for Visa with 004512: typed, so the box is plain.
- Take RM 45.00: green again.
- ABC beside the box calls up the on-screen keyboard, for a reference with letters. The boxes never call it up by themselves, so it does not cover the keypad.
- A keyboard types straight into the box once it has the ring. A barcode scanner types into it too: scan the slip's code.
- A scan into Payment Amt by mistake never takes the payment: the scanner's Enter is ignored there, and the box goes back to what it held.
An optional reference
For a method that does not need one, the box is white and says · optional. You may still type a reference there, such as the last digits of a bank transfer. It is kept on the payment exactly as a required one is.
Where the reference goes
- On the payment, saved on this POS with it and sent to the cloud with it.
- On the Payments tab of the payment window, under the payment: Ref 004512.
- When the payment is taken back, in the dialog's line, and in what to do: Void it on the card terminal, or refund it in the DuitNow or e-wallet app (Ref 004512), then confirm.
- On the receipt, under the payment's row, when your receipt format has the field Payment reference (in the back office, Print Formats, the receipt, + Add a field). See Design a receipt.
- Ref 004512: printed under its payment, in English as all paper is.
On Android
The box is the same, beside Payment Amt, and so are its words: Reference for Visa · required, · optional, Visa reference number. The differences:
- There is no ABC. A tap on the box puts the ring on it and calls up the tablet's keyboard, which has letters. The number pad below still types digits into it.
- Done on the tablet's keyboard, or Enter on a plugged-in keyboard, ends the reference: the keyboard goes down and the ring goes back to Payment Amt.
- Take says Enter the reference first until a required reference is typed, as on Windows.
- Reference for Visa · required: tap it to type; the tablet's keyboard comes up.
- Enter the reference first: Take waits for the reference.
