On this page
A dish sold by weight is priced per unit of weight: a prawn at RM 120.00 the kilo, a salad bar at RM 3.50 the 100 g. Its quantity is a weight, such as 0.455, and the line comes to the weight times the price.
The weight is typed on a number pad, or read off a scale plugged into the POS: an Aclas OS2 scale, by USB, on the Windows and the Android POS alike.
Before you start
- The dish has Sold by weight / measure ticked in the back office, on its Pricing tab, and a unit such as KG. Its price is the price of one unit. See Items: Pricing.
- To read a scale, the scale is plugged into this POS by USB and switched on for it: on the POS, ⚙, Hardware, Scale, Read a scale on this POS. See The scale. Without a scale, the weight is typed.
- Whether the POS asks the weight at once is a setting of the POS, in the back office: Ask the weight when a sold-by-weight item is picked, on the POS terminal setting's Selling tab. See POS Terminal Settings: Selling tab.
| Ask the weight when a sold-by-weight item is picked | When you tap the dish |
|---|---|
| Ticked | The weight pad opens at once. The dish goes on with the weight; Cancel adds nothing. |
| Not ticked | The dish goes on at 1. Tap its quantity to type or read the weight. |
Weigh a dish as you pick it
- Put the dish on the scale.
- Tap the dish's button (or type its code, or pick it in the search list). The weight pad opens.
- Watch the scale line under the entry until it says steady.
- Press ⚖️ Read scale. The weight fills the entry, for example 0.455. Or type the weight yourself.
- Press OK. The dish goes on the bill with that weight.
- The dish's name.
- Sold by weight: read the scale, or type the weight. Cancel does not add it.: on a POS with no scale, Sold by weight: type the weight. Cancel does not add it.
- The entry: the weight, up to three decimal places.
- The scale line: what the scale says now, several times a second. Scale: 0.455 kg · steady is a weight ready to read; · settling means the plate is still moving. Shown only on a POS with a scale.
- .: the decimal point.
- ⚖️ Read scale: takes the weight off the scale into the entry. It does not put it on the bill: you still press OK. Shown only on a POS with a scale switched on, for a dish sold by weight.
- Cancel: the dish is not added. Never greyed, even while the scale is being read.
- OK: puts the dish on the bill with the weight in the entry.
Read scale, step by step
When you press ⚖️ Read scale:
- It says Reading scale…, and the line under the entry says what it is waiting for: Waiting for the weight to settle…, Waiting for the scale to send a weight…, Connecting to the scale…
- It waits for a steady weight, for about ten seconds at most. It always ends: a scale that sends nothing says so in words.
- A good weight fills the entry, in the dish's own unit: kilos to three places, grams in whole numbers.
- If you type while it waits, what you typed is kept, and the pad says The weight arrived after you started typing, so what you typed was kept.
- A refused weight leaves the entry as it was, and the pad says why. See What if….
Weigh a dish already on the bill
When the POS does not ask the weight at once, the dish goes on at 1. Then:
- Tap the line's quantity square. The quantity pad opens, with Now 1. Type the weight. Nought voids it.
- Put the dish on the scale, and press ⚖️ Read scale. Or type the weight.
- Press OK. The line takes the weight.
The same way changes a weight already on the bill. See Change the quantity.
On the bill
- 0.455: the weight, in the quantity square. Under the name: the weight with its unit, times the price of one unit, and what the line comes to: 0.455 kg × 120.00 = 54.60.
A dish sold by weight always has a line of its own: a second one is weighed again.
On Android
The scale works the same way, by USB. The differences:
- ⚖️ Read scale is a green button.
- After a good read, the line under the entry says what was read: Weighed 0.455 kg.
- The first time the scale is used, Android asks whether FooodPos may use the USB device. Answer Allow. Until then the line says Scale: waiting for permission.
- The quantity pad of a line sold by weight says Weighed: type the weight, up to three decimal places.
- Its own words for what goes wrong are in What if…, marked Android.
