Save & Fire
Send the dishes just rung to the kitchen. What Save & Fire saves on the POS, the kitchen tickets and the master slip it prints, what the POS says after, and what to do in Print log when a ticket does not reach its printer. On the Windows and the Android POS.
On this page
Save & Fire is the blue button at the end of the bar under the menu. It saves the dishes you have just rung on the bill and sends them to the kitchen: a kitchen ticket prints at each kitchen station's printer, or shows on the kitchen display.
Press it every time a table orders: the first order, and every dish they add later.
Before you start
- The kitchen stations are set up. In the back office, each dish goes to a kitchen station (Hot Kitchen, Drinks Bar…), and each station has its printer. On the POS, each kitchen printer is set under Settings, Hardware. See Kitchen printers.
- No right is needed. Save & Fire is always on the bar: a System Button profile in the back office cannot hide it, because it is the only way to send new dishes to the kitchen.
The button, part by part
- not sent: under every dish the kitchen has not been sent yet, in amber. When only part of a line is new, it says how much: 1 not sent. A sent dish you cut or took off shows −1 to delete in red: its DELETE slip waits for the next Save & Fire.
- Save & Fire 3: the number is how many bill lines are waiting for the kitchen, with any DELETE slip still to print. While there is something to send, the pan and egg on the button keep tossing. With nothing to send, the button says Nothing to fire and is grey.
- ← Tables: going back without Save & Fire asks what to do with the dishes not sent. See Leaving a bill with dishes not sent.
Send the dishes to the kitchen
- Ring the dishes on the bill. See Add dishes to the bill.
- Press Save & Fire 3.
- The POS saves the dishes, marks them sent and prints the kitchen tickets, all on this POS, at once.
- At a table, the POS goes back to the table plan by itself, so you can take the next order. It says there where the tickets went, for example Printing: HOT, BAR.
- A quick sale (a bill at no table) stays on the sales screen: the customer is at the counter, waiting to pay.
Open the table again and the dishes are under a heading of their own, 1st order · 12:05, without not sent. Each Save & Fire of the bill is one round: what the table adds later goes under 2nd order, and so on, each in its own colour. Dishes rung and not sent yet are under New — not fired.
What the kitchen gets
Each kitchen station gets one ticket with its own dishes. If the terminal setting has the master slip on, the POS also prints one master slip with every dish of the round.
- The station: the kitchen station this ticket is for, by its name (its code when it has none).
- The ticket number and time: this POS's code and a number counted through the day, the same number on every station's ticket of one Save & Fire.
- TABLE T6, large, then the guests, the order type and who served, and the bill number. A bill at no table prints its order type here instead.
- The dishes, large:
2 x Nasi Lemak Ayam, then each choice (- Extra sambal) and the dish's note in bold (* Crispy). A dish's second-language name prints under its name. *** ADDITION ***: on every ticket after the bill's first Save & Fire, so the kitchen knows these are added to a table it already cooks for. A DELETE slip says*** DELETE ***.- MASTER SLIP: one per Save & Fire, on the master slip printer, with every dish of the round in the order it was keyed, a tick box before each and the station it went to after it. For the runner who carries the plates out. Whether it prints is the terminal setting's; see Print Formats: the master slip.
The layout of each slip (what prints, how large) is the restaurant's print format, set in the back office. A station with a kitchen display gets the dishes on its screen instead of paper.
What the POS says after Save & Fire
The POS says in one line where every ticket went, and anything that will not reach paper. Each part is one of these:
| It says | What it means |
|---|---|
| Printing: HOT, BAR. | The tickets are printing on those stations' printers. All is well. |
| HOT shows on screen only. | HOT has a kitchen display and no printer: the dishes are on its screen. |
| HOT: kitchen screen, or paper if the screen is off. | HOT has both: the ticket prints only if its screen does not answer. |
| BAR prints at another POS once the cloud has this order. | BAR's printer is on another POS: that POS prints it when the cloud has the order. |
| HOT: printer not set up on this POS. | HOT's printer is not reachable from this POS: nothing prints here. |
| Kitchen Printer 2 is not set up yet, so nothing prints there. Set it up in Hardware, Printer. | A kitchen printer has no address yet. Said once per sign-in. |
| HOT cannot print: not set up. | The station's printer cannot be used. Check it in Settings, Hardware. |
| No kitchen station: Coke. | No station takes this dish: nobody is told to make it. |
| 3 items marked sent. None of them go to the kitchen. | None of the dishes go to a station (canned drinks, for example). |
| Sent to the kitchen. The cloud has not answered yet; it is told as the connection allows. | The tickets printed; the internet is slow or down. Nothing to do. |
When a ticket does not reach its printer
A kitchen printer may be off, out of paper, or not answering. The POS keeps the ticket and tries again by itself while it is sure nothing reached the printer. Whatever it cannot settle on its own waits for a person, and a red banner says so on the table plan and over the sales screen:
- What is wrong, most urgent first: Kitchen printer Hot Kitchen not answering, 1 ticket waiting, 1 ticket not printed at Hot Kitchen, 1 ticket may have printed: check Drinks Bar, 1 ticket waiting for the cloud before printing, or 2 tickets at this outlet need a person.
- Dismiss: drops the banner and what it is about, for good, with one tap. Those tickets are not printed by themselves again. If the dishes are still wanted, print them from Reprint ticket. A new problem brings the banner back.
- Open: opens Print log with Needs attention at the top.
- ⚙ Settings: Print log is the first line of its menu. It opens the same window. (Before 0.2.55 this line was called Kitchen problems.)
Print log: Needs attention
On this POS
- Needs attention: the kitchen tickets that need a person. When nothing needs one, this part is not there at all.
- Dismiss all: the banner's Dismiss, for everything listed. The tickets are not printed by themselves again.
- The ticket: the station, the ticket number (CANCEL or REPRINT before it for those slips), the table, where it stands (Printer not answering, trying again, Not printed or May have printed) and how long ago. The reason is under it.
- Retry now: tries the same printer again at once. Use it once the printer is on and has paper. It says Trying it again now.
- Print on another printer: lists the other printers this POS can use. Tap one; it says Printing on Drinks Bar. With none: There is no other printer this POS can use.
- It printed: the ticket did come out; nothing more is printed. It says Marked as printed.
- Print again: prints it again, marked REPRINT, so the kitchen does not cook it twice. It says Printing it again, marked REPRINT.
- Don’t print: the kitchen will not get this ticket from this POS. Only when the dishes are not wanted, or the kitchen already has them. It asks first. It says It will not be printed.
- Close: back to where you were.
- The print log: under Needs attention, every print this POS tried in the last 14 days, kept on this POS only. See Print log.
Which buttons a ticket has depends on where it stands:
| The ticket | Retry now | Print on another printer | It printed | Print again | Don’t print |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Printer not answering, trying again: nothing reached the printer | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ||
| Not printed: the POS gave up | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| May have printed: it went to the printer, but the printer did not confirm | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
Deal with a ticket that did not print
- Press Open on the banner, or ⚙, Print log.
- Walk to the printer. Check that it is on, has paper and its cover is shut.
- If the ticket is May have printed, look for it at the printer first. If it is there, press It printed.
- If nothing came out, press Retry now. If that printer is broken, press Print on another printer and choose one.
- If the dishes are no longer wanted, press Don’t print and confirm.
- Press Close.
Under Notices, the same window lists what the cloud said about a send afterwards, for example Table T6: Teh Tarik had already gone to the kitchen from another POS. Check it is not made twice. Each has Dismiss, and Print again where one can be printed. Under At this outlet it lists other POS's tickets that nobody has printed, with Print here and Print again here.
Don’t print asks with a small Windows question: Don't print this ticket? The kitchen will not get it from this POS. Answer OK to drop it. Print again shows only for somebody who may reprint kitchen tickets.
The bar is the same, in the same order, with two differences: Split is called Split bill, and once dishes have gone to the kitchen there is a Call button, when the outlet has an order board (see Call the order number).
- Save & Fire 3: the same button, doing the same. It stays in view at the end of the bar when the bar scrolls.
The banner shows its first two lines and and 1 more under them. Don’t print asks in a window, Don't print #T01-0042?, with The kitchen will not get this ticket from this POS. Only do this if the dishes are not wanted, or the kitchen already has them. and the buttons Don’t print and Keep it. Print on another printer opens the list of printers under the button. A USB kitchen printer may first need Allow on the tablet: the banner says A USB kitchen printer needs permission on this tablet: tap Allow.
