Pay one bill with several methods

Take one bill in parts, part cash and part card, or a share from each guest. Key a part in Payment Amt and Take it, then take the rest; the Payments tab lists every payment, with Bill total, Paid and Balance under it. On the Windows and the Android POS.

One bill can be paid by several payments: part in cash and the rest by card, or a share from each guest. You take each part in the same payment window, one after another. The bill closes when nothing is left to pay.

This is not the same as splitting the bill. Here there is one bill and one receipt, with every payment printed on it. When each group wants its own bill and its own receipt, split the bill before anyone pays: see Split bill.

Before you start

How a part payment works

Payment Amt decides how much one payment takes:

  • Left empty, Take takes everything still due. That is a whole payment.
  • Less than is due, Take takes only that. That is a part payment, and the bill stays open for the rest.

Every payment you take is kept on this POS at once. After each one, the box is empty again, and the window shows what is still due.

Take the first part

  1. Choose the method for this part, for example Cash.
  2. Key the part in Payment Amt, for example 20: tap 2 and 0 on the keypad, or type it. Beside it the window says what is left after this one: LEFT AFTER THIS 25.00.
  3. Press Take RM 20.00. If the method opens the cash drawer, it opens.
  4. The window stays open. The top now says Balance due RM 25.00, with Paid so far 20.00 of 45.00. On the left, two tabs appear, Receipt and Payments (1), and the Payments tab opens by itself.
Keying a part: Payment Amt shows the part, and what is left after it.
  1. The method for this part. Choose it first: a method chosen after you key the amount keeps the amount, but starts its reference box empty.
  2. Payment Amt with LEFT AFTER THIS 25.00: the part this payment takes, and what the bill will still owe after it.
  3. Take RM 20.00: takes the part. Its words always say what it takes.

Take the rest

  1. Choose the next method, for example Visa.
  2. Leave Payment Amt empty to take all of what is left, or key the next guest's share.
  3. If the method needs a reference, key it (the box is amber and Take says Enter the reference first until you do).
  4. Press Take RM 25.00.
  5. Go on until nothing is left. The last payment closes the bill, and the window shows Paid.
After a part payment: Balance due, Paid so far, and the Payments tab, open by itself.
  1. Receipt and Payments (1): the two tabs a bill gets once it has a payment. The number is how many payments it has.
  2. The Payments list: every payment on the bill, with the bill's figures under it (see The Payments tab, part by part).
  3. Balance due with Paid so far 20.00 of 45.00: what is still to pay, and what is paid of the whole.
  4. Visa: the method for the next part.
  5. Take RM 25.00: with Payment Amt empty, it takes the whole balance.

The Payments tab, part by part

The Payments tab lists every payment on the bill, oldest first. It opens by itself each time a part is taken or taken back. Tap Receipt to see the receipt as it will print, with the payments so far under the TOTAL and a bold Balance due line; it stays there until the next payment.

The Payments tab: each payment, numbered, with its small print and its bin.
  1. Payments (3): the tab, with how many payments the bill has.
  2. Paid earlier, at the top, with a dot instead of a number: money the bill counts that this POS did not take, such as a part paid at another POS. It has no bin.
  3. The number: each payment this POS took is numbered, so a bill paid 20.00 cash and the rest by card reads as two payments at a glance.
  4. The method, its small print, the amount and the bin: when it was taken, what was handed over and the change (Handed 50.00, change 5.00, for the cash that closed a bill), and its reference (Ref 004512). The bin takes a payment back: see Take back a payment.
  5. On its way to the cloud: the payment is saved on this POS and not yet on the cloud. It goes by itself, and the mark clears when it has arrived. See Paid, or Saved on this POS.
  6. Bill total, Paid and Balance: the whole bill, what is paid, and what is left.

After the last part

The bill closes and the window shows Paid, with Paid RM 45.00 under the change. The receipt lists each payment on its own row, and the change once at the end:

The receipt of a bill paid by two methods: each payment on its own row.
  1. One row per payment: a cash row shows what the guest handed over, and a Change row follows when there was change.

Print, email and Exit work as for any bill: see The receipt after payment.

On Android

On Android

The parts are the same. The differences:

  • The box at the top says Due now, with Bill total and Paid beside it. Under a keyed part, the box says LEFT 25.00.
  • The tabs are Receipt and Payments (1), as on Windows. Each payment's small print reads 13:42 · handed over 50.00, change 5.00 · Ref 004512. A payment this POS did not take says not taken on this POS, and one taken back on the cloud says reversed on the cloud.
  • On a phone, or a tablet held upright, there is no left column. Once the bill has a payment, a slim line Payments (2) › shows under Due now. Tap it to open the same list as a sheet, with Close at the top. It never opens by itself, so it does not cover the keypad.
  • The Paid screen says Total paid RM 45.00, and under it how the bill was split: Cash 20.00 · Visa 25.00, so you can read it back to the guest.
Android: a part keyed, LEFT 25.00 under it.
  1. Due now: what is still to pay, with the bill total and what is paid beside it.
  2. Payment Amt with LEFT 25.00: the part, and what will be left after it.
